Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Spicy, interesting chords

All the time! Although, not nearly as much thought put into it as you clearly have, haha. I use "cthulhu" by xfer and J74 Progressive...literally just fucking around until I find sweet chords that work well together.

The wonderful thing is, it forces me away from my pretty bland major-chord-esque stuff I like to default to because my knowledge in music theory isn't that great.

Check out those plugs if you care to...I feel like you might enjoy them quite a bit.

sounds so well produced how long have you been producing music?

5 most recent years on my own with another 5 years before that songwriting and playing in a rock band - I was putting together lite ideas on garageband and working with other engineers during that time.

Consistently writing and producing has definitely shown progress from my early crap, that's for sure.

That's awesome that you were able to work with other engineers probably helped a ton

Oh yeah, it was so confusing at first, I remember seeing them patch a ton of stuff into big boards and having zero fucking clue of what was going on (they were just bussing stuff, ha) - that's definitely what created the initial interest, especially once I started to use Logic & midi to actually create stuff on my own.

If you know of anyone who produces/engineers/tracks, just ask to shadow them. Unreal how much that helps.

Honestly, I hear that more often than not with comments on my music..."sounds like it could be used for a commercial or a movie soundtrack."

I've worked in post production for film/commercials for years, so makes sense...but I'm definitely not actively pursuing that while writing them, ha.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: What/Who inspired you to start?

I toured in a pop-rock band, spent almost 10 years writing and playing that style of music.

One night about 4 years ago, I went out and got drunk with some friends in downtown Chicago. We all took a cab home at about 2AM and the driver had a top 40 station on that happened to be playing a massive DJ mix. "The Devil's Den" by Skrillex came on and I was completely blown away, had never heard music like that before. I came home, researched it, found him and a whole shit ton of other people in the electronic scene, and I've been writing it since.

+1 to the last comment! Change the focus to working at least X minutes per day. I try to hit at least 30 minutes, and while most days I work much longer, those days where everything sucks is when hitting your goal really counts.

More often than not, you'll surprise yourself with what ideas happen when you still put in the work. As far as when you stop? As long as you're consistent and put in the time, there isn't really a correct answer.

Regarding the projects that don't feel right yet, to quote Brian Wilson loosely, "try to finish all of your ideas 100%...even the shitty ones." I can't tell you how many songs I just wasn't really feeling until I really fleshed it out, put in the work, and then all of a sudden it turned into one of my favorites.

I probably check every day to see when FL Studio (native) will be available on a Mac.

For now, Ableton/Bitwig/Logic in that order. Bitwig is SO much fun...but the sampling and arrangement editing just isn't there yet.

Thank you for the kind words! I actually messed around with layers in the chorus for a long while and I totally agree with you...but everything I tried to do just muddied it up a bit and took away from the low bass stabs that I wanted to be the centerpiece.

That's why the higher stuff is all just ping-ponging around the sides, sweeping through the middle occasionally. Just got to the point of "ok, now I'm just changing stuff to change stuff", ha.

Please share! The more the merrier.

When it comes to composition and writing in general, it was important for me to really come to terms with the statement, "I am an artist." I started to act like it and it is paying off huge dividends.

Here are some books that really helped:

"Art & Fear" by David Bayles and Ted Orland
"The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield
"Music Habits - The Mental Game of Electronic Music Production" by Jason Timothy

The running theme? Do the work. If there's one thing we can all relate to, it's sitting alone while working tirelessly on your art.
