I don't think there's a much easier way to do it but some DAWs definitely make it easier than others.

I totally get what you mean, I tend to procrastinate doing it because bouncing things to me just seems like a lot of work and like I'm using hard drive space holding samples that I'll likely never use (let's forget about the thousands of downloaded samples I have actually never used...).

However it's really not that bad. I just have a "Project Specific" subfolder in my "Samples" folder that holds a million tiny little samples that I need. Most named "_____ Reverb", haha.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Problems bouncing on logic
« on: April 07, 2016, 05:21:19 pm »
This might not answer your question perfectly and I also don't use Logic, but I know that some people like to use a separate click sound for sidechaining.

The reason is that the sidechain isn't so clean when your source signal isn't a nice smooth click. It's a little messier and unpredictable especially when you're trying to sidechain it super tight.

Sometimes I use a super short sine wave that isn't actually sent to the master (therefore is not heard) with no attack or release so it's a straight click that dips the lead or whatever nice and cleanly.

Sound Design / Re: What exactly does a "tape stop" effect entail?
« on: March 21, 2016, 11:32:11 pm »
It's a combination of pitch and time stretching the audio  :)

Wouldn't time stretching also pitch it down?

I'll individually sidechain elements that are actually different.

However, if I'm layering a few sounds for a lead or a chord or something, I'll just bus those.

So if I'm sidechaining my bass and my lead at the same time, those are sidechained differently. If I'm sidechaining the bassy part of my lead and the higher part of my lead, I'll just bus them.

Sound Design / What exactly does a "tape stop" effect entail?
« on: March 17, 2016, 08:03:35 pm »
I've used dBlue's TapeStop before and I like the effect. I'm aware of kiloHearts' new TapeStop plugin as well. I've tried in the past using spectrum analyzers to see if I could figure out what exactly the effect is, but I'm not that great at that sort of stuff.

It's not just being pitched down, obviously, so what else is in the effect?

I'll second Cableguys Volume Shaper. I've heard really good things and those guys make quality VSTs.

EQ: Fabfilter Pro-Q (Can't go wrong)
Reverb: I'm between on this right now. I was using Lexicon but it was causing problems so right now I'm using FL's stock Reverb 2.
Delay: Typically integrated synth delays in Massive or Harmor for example.
Sidechain: Fruity Limiter or if I want a constant rhythm then Kickstart.
Compression: Maximus
Saturation: Maximus?
DAW: FL Studio

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Difference between Gain and Volume
« on: March 16, 2016, 01:42:16 pm »
As far as I know, gain refers to the pre amplification (on the way in) and volume would be post amplification (on the way out).

So gain might be distorting it if it's pushing the limit while volume probably won't (assuming there's no limiter after the post).

Sound Design / Re: quality piano synth's/kontakt libraries

Nexus has got a bunch of nice pianos. They're nothing ridiculous or groundbreaking but they're not too CPU intensive and they're pretty damn good.

Sound Design / Re: presets vs sound design
« on: March 08, 2016, 04:00:42 pm »
Knowing your stuff when it comes to sound design is helpful when it comes to editing presets. I frequently pull up presets that I've made or that I keep and am familiar with not because I want to use that sound exactly, but because it's pretty close to the sound in my head so I can just tweak it real quick from there.

A lot of people will say that presets are okay but don't use them instead of learning sound design. They work really well together. You'll also get better at choosing which presets to use as you get better with sound design as well.

Are you using an audio interface? What audio drivers are you using? ASIO drivers are recommended. Also play with your buffer size setting. Turning it up will be safer quality-wise but will increase latency as well which isn't good for playing synths and stuff.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Good kick plugin for FL studio

I'll vouch for Sonic Academy's KICK. I love it. It works for lots of different genres, it's super intuitive, and it's flexible.

Sound Design / Re: What is the characteristic of a tropical house sound?

Definitely a quick, sharp attack, and almost always layered with a flute/woodwind instrument. I haven't found a way to synthesize the entire lead in one plugin, you basically need to layer.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Where are you from digitally?

My main community was the edmproduction subreddit, among a few other music subs. Some people think the quality's decreasing but I don't really see that, I've just started coming here as well because I'm starting to take production more seriously.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: MIDI vs Audio
« on: January 29, 2016, 06:25:59 pm »
If I'm attacking an idea by attempting to compose and arrange the entire thing first I'll just use some simple VSTs like a Nexus piano or even FL Keys and just something like BooBass for the basslines.

Normally I end up starting sound design earlier than I intended but sometimes I try to get the entire composition and arrangement done first. I'd avoid using straight midi just because it's really no effort to throw a vst in front of it and make it sound a little bit better.
