- I do prety drastic musical changes really late in production process. That makes re-sampling totally irelevant technique for me.

the thing is, most of the time i dont regret it, but when i do, its really not funny.
worse is when i end up with 2 different versions of the same track, and both sound good

if you are both making electronic music, there is plenty you can share with him after 6 years of struggling.
it just comes down to how much you like him, i guess

The reason this is difficult if you're working with samples is that hitting a drum harder doesn't just result in a louder sound but one with a sharper transient and a greater range of frequencies, among other things. So any drums you're working with to make a swing pattern, you'd want samples of soft and hard hits to make it sound convincing.

what i do is just low pass the lower offbeat kick, and it fits in pretty easy, usually.
well, with synth kicks im talking about. dunno about acoustic

i do most of my mixing at low level. its just easier to hear the differnces between the sounds.

as for "incredibly" low levels, yeah i do check my mixes like that, but i dont mix.
my technique is to have a volume plugin at the end of my mastering chain, set to -20db, or whatever sounds best for that track, then i just enable it at various stages, to hear what is sticking out too much.

some people even do weird things like playing white noise over the track, to hear what is too loud, but i aint tried that. dont like that idea at all.

Synth kicks are just a pitch sweep, top to bottom. Eq boost at 100hz should get the job done.

Another thing I like doing, is using a band passed acoustic kick to give warmth in certain areas

Passion punch is correct. Find a audio editor that lets you snap to zero crossings, and problem solved

It happens when you cut audio in random places, rather than on the zero crossing.

If you cut on zc, you usually won't need to fade in and out

great for getting warnings about that spiking lead sound, and making sure your kick / bass are peak around the same area as your faves, but trying to copy the complete spectrum onto another song, usually doesnt actually solve any problems. just makes the track sound different

learn a wavetable synth. even z3ta 1 gets sounds like that effortlessly. no fx needed

if we're talking about club music here:
you need to remember that because they have so much low freq / energy, anything you do with them has a drastic affect on the perception of the whole track. they can totally destroy the rhythm of any track, just with one badly placed tom on the grid. the reverse is also true. if its well placed, it can carry the whole track, and the track will sound pathetic without it.
so with this in mind, eq and level balancing is everything. even the perfect tom can sound wrong, if its a db too loud.
they should be given the same importance as your sub bass, and each should be tackled with the other in mind, as they both, together, create their own rythym
