Mixing/Mastering / Re: Parallel Compression and Phase Issues

If you treat them carefully there will be no phase issue. Compression is basically changing volume and causes no phase shift.

If you verse is louder than chorus, your layering might be wrong.
You can use volume automation if you want to keep the sound as it is.
I usually add some volume automation on my sub bass channel.

+1 for pianoteq.

Now I know why it takes so much time to finish a track. Great point. Thanks.

Study some porter robinson's tracks. His music is repetitive but not boring at all.

I've always had a goal of melting some completely different styles of music into one. I haven't been succesful yet but I believe it'll eventually shape my unique style.

I try to keep them as mono as I can. I add a bit of reverb and add distorted noise for more transient.

Sound Design / Re: How did you learn sound design?
« on: February 16, 2016, 02:10:41 pm »
subtractive, additive, fm, etc...
Start with learning basic synthesis. There are tons of tutorials on the internet.
After then, you move on to copying other's sounds, or experimenting with synths.
Eventually you will get better sound design skill.

a bit more reverb will make it more dream-like

I really liked experimental sounds but I think it needs more dynamics on structure.

This method can be used as a way to study well-mixed tracks. I use eq to find out placements of instruments along the spectrum. Using M/S splitter also helps me with stereo.
When you are referencing tracks, it's not about making frequency spectrum similar. It's about overall brightness, amount of compression, dynamics, depth. Matching spectrums will only helps you with brightness.

I always start with sound designing, then make main 8 bar loop. Once I'm pretty sure about the loop, I move on to sketching song structure.
After that, my workflow is quite messy, too. When I'm running out of creative idea, I work on making new sound, mixing. Otherwise, I try to work fast so that I don't lose my idea.
