WIPs / Genre? No clue. 82bpm chill/dark collab I just did
« on: January 31, 2016, 06:39:44 pm »
Hi! My friend sent me a GarageBand track with just acoustic guitar, and I thought it sounded cool.. So I slapped it into Ableton and made stuff. This is my 2nd track since getting into ableton a couple months ago, so I've got a lot to learn.. All advice appreciated! Mixing, arrangement, anything. Thank you.

Daang, very cool! It sounds sparse and full at the same time, something I have trouble doing in my tracks. Really nice sound design, subtle builds, mix sounds good (even on the crappy speaker I'm using right now). I would be really proud if I made a track like this. :-D
In fact, I'm having trouble coming up with any constructive criticism, which doesn't happen often. Nice work!

Edit: I listened again on headphones. Sick track. I love that saw pluck that goes through the whole song, and opens to a big supersaw.. (what synth is that... Sylenth?)
Ok one thing I would add for some movement, is a subtle autopan on that pluck in the end section, like 4:30 to 5:30..

Now... Teach me everything you know!  ;D

Finished Tracks / Re: Feel | My First Track [not sure of genre]

Very cool! Inspiring actually.. Makes me want to do something chill like this.
It takes a lot of control, to hold back from making melodies more complicated -- for me anyway. :)  And not layering too much stuff, and keeping things, well, chill. Nice work on that.
About the flute sound -- I like the initial one at 2:30ish, but when the higher pitch comes in at 3:00 -- that seems to me like it'd be better as a whole nother synth sound, or maybe it does just need some EQ. Not sure.
The sub in the last section was just too subby for me. I thought a truck was driving by, and it didn't do anything musically for me. I like the idea though -- it could be fixed for sure.
Great job!

nice, man!  I like the high energy.  Kinda psytrance-y.
As for critique, I feel like the mix needs a little.... space? (no pun intended.) I'm kind of new to mixing, so I don't know exactly how to achieve this, but.. maybe it needs a little width and general EQing perhaps.
Good work!

I agree with Wontolla about the bass -- it's lacking low end for sure.  As for the overall mix.. Hard to critique the rest of it until you beef up the lower freqs.

Otherwise, very cool! I haven't heard the original, so I can't tell what's you and what's Kaskade -- but either way I like it.  :)

I like it.  The sub is good and loud in my headphones. The bass portamento (and overall sound) is sweet! Very liquidy, me like.
Is the crackle at the beginning supposed to be there? I can't tell if it's meant to be a vinyl crackle on purpose or not. :)  I'd probably leave it out if it were me.. Or else go all out and make it obvious.
The sidechaining is well done -- makes the mix breathe really well, sounds great.
Nice work!

Nice one!  First, what I like:
The supersaw chords are awesome.
The bass is nice and thick, and the syncopated rhythm is very energetic.
Nice sidechained risers, good buildups.
Overall a good mix -- not muddy or too busy! Sounds really good.

What I'd work on:
As others said, more elements. The first 1:30 especially, could use some melody OR pad OR arpeggio.. something besides the bassline.
The silent moments at 2:00 and 4:00.. I'm torn on that. I like it because it leaves me hanging, but I feel like there could be a little something in there to tell me the song's not over yet. Maybe a reverse reverb of the synth line that's coming, a quiet little riser, a sample of something/someone...

Overall, great work!

WIPs / Re: "Falling Clear" -- My first song, advice sought!
« on: January 20, 2016, 04:09:34 pm »
I appreciate all the advice nonetheless! It's all opinions, and my non-producer friends all just say "it's really good!" (I'm sure you know how that goes). I'm tempted to let this track sit for a while and move onto something else. After I fix *just a few* little things.....  :o

Btw, just to clarify, it's true I'm an ableton noob, but I used to use hardware synths and Cakewalk back in the day (10-15 years ago!). But working with software is sooo much faster, I love it. I never completed a song back then that I was happy with.

Anyway, I agree that the "wub" lacks bite. I should figure that out. Since dubstep isn't my main area, I haven't really polished that. ;-)

Thanks again!!

WIPs / "Falling Clear" -- My first song, advice sought!
« on: January 20, 2016, 12:21:10 am »
Hi folks, I'm kind of an Ableton noob, but been getting really into it the past couple months. This has my wife on vocals. I find mixing to be really hard, but it's probably because I have too much stuff going on at once.... I'm pretty sure I need to strip out some layers -- do you agree?
Any other advice highly sought.  FYI I mixed everything a few dB lower than 0, and later threw OTT and a limiter on the master, and tweaked until it was decent-ish. But I know I have a ways to go.  Thanks!!

EDIT: update -- I changed some stuff, stripped out some extra synths, added some vocal pitch correction (GSnap), changed the hihats, automated some stuff... Thanks for the tips so far!! I think the mix is sounding better. I took out OTT and just stuck with a limiter and Glue.  Here's the updated link:

Really cool!
The mix sounds quite good to me, it's nice and loud, not muddy.
During the buildup at 1:40, I feel that the space needs to be filled out somehow.. either a pad in the back, or maybe a little reverb on those main synths there?
The main bass sound is awesome overall, but at times (like 2:15-30) I wished the amp attack was a little faster -- needed a little punch on the higher notes -- I hope that makes sense.
The pre-drop drum buildup is quite good..
Nice work!
