Hello! Billy Mays here with some basic Serum Synthesis! No, but seriously, I've spent time learning my way around the instruments that I use, I'm no master, but I definitely have a strong understanding of a few of them. Now, this isn't a work for all situations tip I'm doing, but a definitely fun way to create unique form of sound. I don't watch tutorials so I don't know if this is common information (not there's anything wrong with watching tutorials, I just learn better by experimenting)
1. Take a sample, any sample, I tend to like using short vocal clips. (don't make it too long)
2. Drop it in as a wave table, and either type in yourself about 1000-1300 (I like 1245) for the slice rate, or just do FFT1024, if you want it to be quicker...but it's not that much quicker, just the time you take to type.
3. Pitch down the key you play in by -2 octaves, it's the pitch the wavetable is now playing it at.
4. Cut out silence, Crossfade (preferably the spectral ones, but wing it!), and then Normalize if you feel it's right.
5. You can also Fade Edges if there's a little too much white noise sounds going around the instruments.
6. And if you want to bro it around a bit, use the Multi Process Squarify, makes it a little more Virtual Riot, or some of Skrillex's stuff.
This is the point where you can experiment!1. Create an LFO to run through the wavetable you made, it can be straight forward, or have it move itself across the board.
2. Maybe filter the wavetable through another one and automate it so you can have a live sample run through a synthetic wavetable. Does well if you RM (ring modulate) with a vocal, can do something you'd here a lot in some of Skrillex's stuff.
3. Automate a filter, maybe phase, or two different bandpasses, or just automatic LFO to automate, can create cool bass sounds.
4.Experiment! Try making something else with the sound.
Post anything you make using these suggestions on here so I can be proud of you!
