Finished Tracks / Re: Mat Zo - Soul Food

I love this flat out funky direction you've taken. This disco infused modern sound you've come up with is right up my street and it sounds so clean and fresh.

This and The Knocks remix you did recently just make me want to dance uncontrollably, which I'm really good at because I can't dance for shit. Really looking forward to hearing the rest of this new album now!

Don't know if you've ever watched this, but he did an interview with Sonic Academy a while back and gave some little insights into some of his habits and his 'wall of sound' style. It's worth a look anyway..

Nice post!

I've just recently got into the habit of taking a track I like, lobbing it into Ableton and then in the arrangement view - with the waveform at the top - basically trying to rebuild all of the elements with blank tracks.

Seen it mentioned on here quite a few times and had been told to give it a go in the past.. I can't tell you how valuable an exercise it is. It really helps you. Not just with foundations/structure etc., it helps you improve your ears too. Breaking down all the elements as best you can will probably reveal things are different to how you imagined. I think, anyway!

It comes with a bit of time and dedication. It took me quite a long time to actually sit down and finish something structurally. What did it for me was a remix competition. The deadline actually helped me focus on it and shut other stuff out. It didn't make me rush it but the looming deadline made me not get too bogged down in certain areas. I had also made peace with the fact that it wouldn't be a masterpiece, but it was all about baby steps, and that was the step I wanted/needed to take to move on. it gives you the confidence to break through what can feel like a brick wall of frustration and 'I'm shit at this' that makes you open your DAW then open iTunes instead. It's part of the learning curve that'll get you towards where you want to be.

A mate once said to me on this subject 'learn from everything you do and try not to be too critical of yourself.' It works, even if you don't know you're doing it!

I'm by no means an expert producer, I'm still a newbie. I read and re-read things that will boggle me for a time, until it clicks, and the satisfaction I draw from being able to understand and apply things is what keeps me going. That counts for all areas of the process. It helps you learn invaluable stuff, too. I can't wait to upload my current WIP on here and have it pulled apart for that reason!

Also trying to start with something other than the intro might help you a bit. The track I'm working on at the minute doesn't have an intro yet, I'll just strip back some of the other parts and make it work, either when it comes to me or whe it's the only thing left to do.

Stuck with it.

Bit of a simple one but does anybody know how to create something like the lead sound in Madeon's Finale? I'm busy trying to put something together and, as usual, I've got sounds in my head that I can't put down in practice yet!

There's probably a patch/preset in existence somewhere but I'd rather take a step back from all that and try slapping something together myself.

Sounds like it's just a brass synth with some distortion and maybe some more detuning, also I think it's layered with a guitar.

I made this in like a minute with sylenth so please don't hardcore judge me or my incorrect notes. http://www44.zippyshare.com/v/nm92IKcL/file.html

Nice one, thanks for that. I'll have a mess about.

No hardcore judging here, I'm not really in a position to hardcore judge  :-X
