Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Cool tip for writing hooks
« on: January 10, 2016, 09:04:32 pm »
This may be common knowledge to music theory aficionados, but for many people (including me up until 8 months ago) you may not know this tip. When trying to write hooks, usually for a drop, or anything that relies more on the syncopation and rhythm rather than purely the melody, try experimenting with flatted-seconds or sharped-sevenths. This sounds unconventional to many people as the notes are not in the traditional major and minor scales, but I promise you this trick is something seen in a lot of music. I honestly prefer to hit the flatted second more often than going to the sharped seventh. It kind of creates an energetic, dissonant feeling that drives the melody forward. You can hear an example of it hear in Dannic & Sick Individuals "Feel Your Love" ( https://youtu.be/LPY9CvVsbH8?t=3m3s) (the first 3 notes of the drop). Check out some of your favorite "less-melodic" tracks and see if they do this, I guarantee youll find it in every few songs or so. Hope this helped some people!

Jungle Terror doesnt rely on melodies too much. I suggest trying to make a hook primarily based around the i and v, throwing a ii,III, iv, or vi in there at the ends of phrases. Also playing around with a flatted-second or sharped-seventh can help you make cool riffs for "banger" music.

This redditor made an amazing video showing you how to do it by splitting any song up into 4 EQ bands then adjusting each bands audio to get the kick out of the song. Check it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwcpLk__6rs

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Orchestral String Plugins
« on: January 10, 2016, 08:26:41 pm »
I've been looking everywhere for a plugin that has huge, vast sounding strings, but I'm never 100% sold on anything. What are your guys' go to string plugins?

Check out the various Kontakt libraries made by Native Instruments or what I use, Spectrasonics Omnisphere.

Ex-Reason user here. While I was a lot more of a beginner back in the day when I used Reason I just feel like it really limited me. Yeah at the end of the day it does the same thing as any other DAW but I strayed away from it as I couldnt use it efficiently. Too much restriction when compared to Ableton or FL. But at the end of the day if youre good with it thats all that matters

Im having an extremely tough time making the break of this track work. I was wondering if anyone could help me with ideas on how to make both breaks fit better or how to design/arrange it differently. Im also down for ideas to completely redo the break. Any general feedback is welcome, would love to hear some peoples opinions on what works and what doesnt. I didnt do a final mix/master yet either. Also if anyone wants to maybe send me a message I would be down to work on a break together with someone

A State of Trance is just a radio show not a record label I believe (Armada would be the closest one)

Splice has a list of the most used plugins within the projects uploaded to their site. Its probably a pretty good representation of the overall EDM community.

Heres the link: https://splice.com/plugins

The Top 5 go:
1. Massive
2. Sylenth
3. Ozone
4. FabFilter Pro-Q
5. Sausage Fattener

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Piano Plugins?
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:00:42 pm »
TruePianos is my go to when it comes to finding a "real" sounding piano. It really has a nice reverb to it and makes me feel like im playing a classic piano. When im looking for something atmospheric or unique, check out Nexus and Omnisphere. However, Id like to point out that many people have already overused Nexus pianos. To get around this I suggest downloading extra preset packs or ensuring you layer your nexus pianos with other sources. Many people will instantly hear the overused Nexus presets and you wont sound original. Nailing pianos is a difficult task, good luck!
