I'm liking where this is going so far.

Few things to note (and some are just personal preference):
In the drop, your mixdown is very cluttered- you could definitely do without so much going on in the highs/high mids. Almost sounds like there's white noise in the background constantly.
Another thing about the drop (and in general really) is that your drums aren't coming through all too well (up until the second drop, that's where they start to fit). I feel like they could stand out a bit more.
Your lead is quite high pitched, so those parts where you raise the melody by an octave actually hurt to listen to.
Another thing that I wasn't fond of was the noise that happened on the 4th beat of (nearly) every measure in the drop- it just made it sound kind of sloppy.

On a positive note, your composition is fantastic and your drum samples fit very well. Once the mixdown is cleaned up I can see myself enjoying this song a lot.

you're right! i eq'd out some layers and it sounds better now. running the drums through a limiter to pop them out.

it's a vocal sample with formant shifting - good point. i turned that down and it sounds much better now! good ears.

thank you.

drums are superb. you could switch it up with lots of sudden foley and percussion like swindail would - and change up the main metal hits after the first few bars. has the potential to be interesting. you could toy around with the release of the hits as well.

I rly dig the track,but I cannot feel 808 at all... :(
Try layering two same samples of 808 and put some distortion on them,so u can hear it well on small speakers too...
Put the 808 in mono and cut unwanted highs and u have it :)
I hope this helps ;)

right on! thank you - i'll layer the 808's so i can hear them on laptop speakers.

try using an LFO or an envelloppe to make it pitch down. ;) (like a real 808)

how would you normally do that? i feel it loses some power once it goes too low.

So, let's start this.

First intro, nice progression. I like the voice in the background. Fit to the genre, i guess.
Breaks are actually surprinsigly good. I like the violin, and the piano is very good.

Drop, The kick is good, but it seems like your 808 is a sample. If so, try creating a real sub bass. It will make it more powerfull. The synth/lead is very cool, in both drops. (First and Second)

The main ideas are pretty well executed, most of the track sounds good.

PS : there's a clicky thing at the start of the track. Needs to be removed, if it's not wanted.

right on. i'll try the sub idea :) thanks

hi guys,

please leave any feedback you have on this - mix wise, sound design wise, overall idea pointers.

no such thing as bad feedback.

much appreciated

intro arp sequence sounds a little empty nearing 0:18. wouldn't hurt to let the ping pong delay spill over

nice synth flourishes at the end of every bar

the chords could be more in your face. ott, distortion, haas effect

your high percs can afford to be autopanned. it'd make it more interesting

samplephonics has pretty good tonal foley/atmospheres. especially Ambient Electronica/liquid soul packs. that'd really help.

the snare could be crunchier - try layering a french house snare and a stereo'd preclap so the kick and snare don't seem like they're all mono.

the stutter would be good with a pitch enveloped/ cutoff enveloped bass.

you could go a little heavier on overall distortion if you're trying the porter sound - CLA/saturn/trash

the 808 decays too fast -  throw a saturator on it so that it has harmonics. especially ableton's saturator - set it to sinoid fold (if i recall) and turn up the base knob by the slightest.

using a sample would be better. try the 808s in the TriSamples 808 Trapstep pack.

sidechain the trap lead. it's extremely nasal so i would try pitching it an octave down.

throw a vocoder on it. it works wonders.

i would put a hall 1.5s delay on it with maybe 159-200ms predelay. compress the reverb with it to get greater presence.

the vocal is pretty resonant in the 300-700 area. notch it or roll off the low-mids.

kick is too soft. bus your kick and snares and treat them.

your synths are lacking shine. throw an ott/saturn/ over them. stereo delay a layer.  the main lead doesn't complement the chords well and flutters all over the place. it's also too present in the mix, to the point that it's louder than the drums. i'd use a less conspicuous lead.

Sound Design / Re: Two ways to make the high pitched Flume sound
« on: January 07, 2016, 02:10:58 pm »
that's unnecessarily complex.

take a subtractive synthesizer and pitch one oscillator as a saw wave high up.

take another oscillator as a bright noise/whitenoise oscillator and mix them.

play any high-octave note.

if your synthesizer doesn't have bright noise, just highpass the finished sound with a smooth slope eq.
