Call me old fashioned, but I still use Fruity Mute 2 for this because IMO it's waaaaaaay cleaner than using Fruity Balance.
If you're using 12, Fruity Mute 2 probably disappeared for you which is a total shame IMO. You can still use it, you just have to find an older project file that has it in it and then flag it as a favorte AFAIK =/

How is it better than Fruity Balance? I've never used it.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: How did you learn how to make music?
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:01:28 pm »
I learned to make music on FL Studio by copying Linkin Park style tracks. I just love Mike Shinoda's style.

Short answer:
At 10 yo we started playing flute in school. Now I play a fuckton of instruments on Kontakt.

Long answer:
After some years I was trying to learn by myself how to play a small old electric piano we had at home. I didn't learn that much, only how to play notes and melodies. At 15 yo I learned by myself how to play acoustic guitar, but I played mainly chords with it and the most important thing I learned was the importance of rhythm and assonance of sounds. In the same period I learned how to tune my guitar by ear by using only an E note reference (this helped me develop a sort of Interval Ear). Then I wanted to learn how to play piano better, but I failed miserably and instead of learning how to play piano in general I learned to play by memory only some Linkin Park songs. And I have an electric guitar too.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Mixing the bass with the sub
« on: January 07, 2016, 08:26:10 pm »
A suggestion for you guys: instead of using a simple sin wave for the sub bass, try adding to it an octave higher sin wave with less than half the total volume of the first osc, because it helps fill the spectrum a little bit (you need to lowpass the entire sub patch to around 100Hz). Of course this has to be done while high passing everything, except the kick, above 120-150Hz. In some cases could sound cool to use a different wave to generate the root note of the sub: for example, you can use a square wave and then low pass it and tame it with an EQ.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Multi-Band Compression Topic
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:51:47 pm »
I don't know you guys, but I have huge delay problems on FL Studio 12 using Fabfilter Pro MB or Waves Multiband Compressor for sound design purposes. I really need to know if there is an elegant solution to this, because automatic delay compensation doesn't solve it, correcting the delay manually does it but doing it is frustrating and stem rendering, while being the best solution I found still seems, unelegant. Also, do all of you use MBCs only while mastering or for sound shaping too?

I usually turn Lookahead off as FL (lets face it) just sucks at compensating it. I havent noticed any real quality drops.

Thanks man! When using it I was searching for Linear Phase on/off but I've never seen that lookahead button. I'm gonna try it and see if it solves it.
Edit: it definitely solves the delay problem.

Hey so mastered my new track today and found some pretty nice thing !

So !

Utility to have -5 Db to get more headroom
J37 from Waves (Tape Recorder) Wich give a little bit of warmth in my mix
Ableton Eq M/S to cut Side 150hz so everything beside that point is Mono
Fabfilter Eq tu cut Everything 28Hz let me get more Headroom
Native Instrument Passive Eq to get some boost and cut where I needed
SSL Compressor to glue the overall thing (Not that much don't hit 4 GR)
Pro Q for little bit of surgical Eqing

And here's comes the limiter so
I've tried all the limiter I got , finally I Used Voxengo elephant then Pro L because Waves limiter in my opinion is really shitty , it cut the transient really fast and make the song crash instantly , with Elephant and Pro L I achieved a proper loud (mix -6.5 Rms loudest part) and still got the transient of my kick and the rest

Hope I Helped !

I don't know what genre do you usually produce, but if it's EDM, then -6.5 Dbs of RMS isn't that loud. My suggestion is to use Izotope Ozone Maximizer, which can bring your track to around -3 Dbs of RMS without distortion.

You don't have to add Fruity Balance, just automate the volume knob of the individual instrument / audio clip in your pattern view. That way it's separate from your mixer channel's volume settings.

Of course there are different approaches. However, I prefer to have almost everything on the mixer only and I choose to automate Fruity Balance because I usually couple it with Fruity Fast LP so my automations are consistent from an organization standpoint and I don't need to jump between interfaces to search my automations.

I've noticed it too that there are quite a few people who tend to break a lot of the traditional 'rules' about throwing plugins on the master chain. I'm guilty of it as well. I like being able to master while I mix if I'm doing it myself rather than treating it as two separate processes.

Even if you don't master your track yourself, in some cases the mastering engineer, when checking the already mixed track for mastering, will tell you to fix something in the mix and re-send it to him. So, my reasoning is that, because I'm mastering my songs by myself, instead of wasting time closing my mixing project and opening my mastering project, I just put what I need on the master (Stereo Imager -> MB Compressor -> Linear EQ -> Maximizer -> Stereo Image Analyzer -> Spectrum Analyzer) and from time to time I use it to check how it feels like mastered (roughly) and compare it to references, then I turn it off and keep working on the track, jumping to the next sections I need to develop.

A little workflow tip. When I started toying around with FL, I used a lot of volume automation by automating the volume slider of the mixer channel where the instrument was routed to, as I learned by watching tutorials on Youtube. This type of automation led me to a lot of problems, due to the fact I couldn't change the volume on mixer for mixing purposes, because the slider would only follow the automation settings and the init settings, so my changes would be reset everytime the automation occurred. The simplest solution for my workflow now is to individually add, when needed, a Fruity Balance on the last slot of the instrument's mixer channel and automate its volume knob. Maybe it's common knowledge, but I hope it helps anyway.

ok without going into much detail it's actually something like:

Waves Center → SSL (Duende Native Bus Comp) → Maag EQ4 → Izotope Ozone 6 (Multiband Dynamics + Maximizer)

I heard from Virtual Riot he sometimes uses Waves Maserati GRP for adding extra loudness without distortion on top of an Ozone chain with Maximizer, do you have experience about that plugin or that use of it as a mastering plugin?

WIPs / Re: Original Ochestral Dubstep track I'm currently working on
« on: January 07, 2016, 04:24:57 pm »
Thanks! I'm aware of that, but please consider this is only a work in progress with a simple master chain on it. The final track will have really dynamic ranged orchestral intro/main parts (RMS around -6/7 Dbs) while the drop will be more aggressively compressed and dubstep oriented with an RMS of around -3/4 Dbs. Right now I'm more focused on the sounds and structure, so, I'd really love to receive feedbacks on that  ;) And maybe ideas on the drop, because right now I'm not sure if going for melodic but still growly or going for a really fat and bass oriented drop.
Listen to every orchestral dubstep, to be inspired. Although WIPs with master chain isn't the best idea ever. Better to have nothing except a fast mix.

Ok man, everyone has his opinions about having a fast master on. I have a master chain to listen how it feels sort-of mastered. However when mixing/EQing I turn the master's FX completely off and it's off pretty much all the time, except for when I want to hear the mix "differently" to change perspective and listening to it slightly compressed by the MBC and with a limiter on to bring it to 0 Db. Tho, to me having on the master something for checking the stereo image and the complete frequency spectrum is vital.

more bass by adding various sub bass?
Yes, definetely, you need to add a sub bass.

Just a little production tip, add a sub bass under everything to give more weight to the mix.

WIPs / Re: Tech House (WIP) | Any tips? Suggestions?

If you want suggestions about creativity, then I can tell you to listen to a lot of music and, if you want, study it, from structure to sounds to vibe. If you want ispiration, listen to a lot of music, really. I can guarantee the ideas will come with time after listening to a lot of music you enjoy. Hope this helps!
