WIPs / Future Bass
« on: March 15, 2016, 08:56:57 pm »
Hey guys, I'm in the process of finishing up this future track.  I recorded some of my friends singing as well as myself playing some saxophone on the bridge.  I'd love feedback on the mixdown or anything in general.  I just want to hear your thoughts :)

Thanks for the input! I made a few small edits and I also think I fixed that snare!  Here is the new version.  I replaced the link above, but here it is again.

This is a future remix of Lost Kings - You.

I'm unsure of how the vocals are really fitting into the mix.  Also, I feel the drops might be too muddy or spread out.  I'm curious what input you guys will have.

Cheers!

Is it the higher end of the 808s that need more you think? Just more character up there or more throughout? Or is the sub level good?

Mostly advice on the mixdown.  ;D  Thanks for all of the suggestions though! I'll keep working on this one and see how I can improve it a little more.

This track is mostly finished. I just have to track more saxophone and clean it up a little.  Maybe take a solo or something.

What do you think of it so far? I just gave it a quick master to put it up for feedback.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Finding a key to write in
« on: January 06, 2016, 07:09:12 pm »
Seeing as though a lot of us are producing electronic music, I think its important to look at how the key we pick affects the bass energy in a track.  For example, if you choose the key of Eb the fundamental will be just below 40Hz.  That's all well and good, but you have to take the sound systems you play on into account.  Most of them don't really reach lower than that so your track can sound like it loses power.

It's just yet another thing to take into account  ;D

This isn't the most fun method, but you will learn a LOT if you do this.

Take a few songs that you really like and write out what is happening.  For example you might write something like "16 bar intro, hats go whole time, kick comes in at bar 9, blah blah blah."  You can do this for the duration of the tune.  Not only do you have a detailed road map, but you can separate it into larger sections like intro, drop, bridge, etc.  Then you can compare these different song forms to find any commonalities!  You'll be coming up with your own song forms in no time :)

I have a degree in instrumental jazz studies so I can't really think without my sax or a piano.

That being said, piano is king! It's by far the best tool for writing in any style.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Is music theory really important ???
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:55:05 pm »
Look at it this way.  Theory is the fundamental inner workings of music.  You want to produce music.  Why would you not want to understand the inner workings of it?  Yeah, you can scrape by with your ear but imagine how much better you could be if you fully understood theory and could make harmony/melody bend at your will.  All of a sudden a whole world of musical color opens up to you and you can make more honest music!

Theory is essential, and anyone who says otherwise is trying to cover up their own shortcomings imho.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Jazzy chords
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:41:46 pm »
In simplest terms, you can start by voicing chords with only the root, 3rd and 7th.  That is all the information you need to tell if a chord is major, minor or dominant.

Normally I wouldn't recommend a real book, but for looking at how harmony moves they're great!  I would also recommend stealing chords from one of the charts inside the real book and try to produce a simple track with the voicing I illustrated above.  It's never considered cheating to steal chords from jazz standards.  It's actually called a contrafact if you do.  Swindle took the chord changes from "Autumn Leaves" to make the track "Summer Fruits."

That would be a good place to start!

Cheers!
