Like a lot of other people - Deadmau5, Daft Punk, Porter Robinson, and Skrillex are big inspirations for me. :) As well as Mat Zo (aaayyy! nice job on the forums haha), Mord Fustang, Haywyre, and The M Machine. There's a few others, and that list changes a bit from time to time haha, but my #1 inspiration will always be The Glitch Mob, for a number of reasons. Their sound and style is like no other and they're some of the most passionate and dedicated producers I've ever seen - they push definitely push boundaries creatively, and pour a lot of love and hard work into their craft. (a neat documentary on their live show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUu8jxWDSOU) ...Plus, they're some of the most down to earth people i've ever met. ...Like, I don't know of any other music group who invites their fans backstage and makes them tacos haha. They're pretty much everything I aspire to be.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: What/Who inspired you to start?
« on: January 08, 2016, 04:55:00 am »
Like others, Daft Punk was my earliest/biggest inspiration. :)
I discovered them shortly before high school and fell in love with their sound instantly. Daft Punk was the first electronic group that I actually recognized, and their sound drew me in. I wanted more, and after listening to Alive 2007 and getting goosebumps, I wanted to figure out how they made their music. At the time I let the magic of producing remain a mystery and enjoyed the sound, but after a few years (and heavy use of Pandora radio haha) I started discovering other artists like The Chemical Brothers, Justice, and Deadmau5 - he was another one of my biggest inspirations in the beginning after hearing Ghosts N' Stuff, and he lead me to find Skrillex and Zedd in their early stages which was another source of inspiration.
The Glitch Mob was also a big inspiration in the beginning. I saw them live in 2011 - that was my first electronic show and it changed my life... to the point where I got two Glitch Mob tattoos haha. No regrets. :)

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Why do you do it?
« on: January 07, 2016, 11:53:05 pm »
I do it because sitting in front of Ableton is the one of the few places where hours feel like minutes to me and I can truly get lost in my emotions and express myself. I've always had a passion for creating and music is my favorite medium. I've always been fascinated by music and sound in general - specifically the sounds of the synthesizer. I prefer the idea of creating music on a computer rather than with an instrument because I like the idea of endless possibilities. Also, because my favorite music and some of my favorite artists have helped me get through the roughest times in life, and have enhanced the good times - if there's any chance I can make others feel the way some of my favorite musicians have made me feel that's awesome.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: How did you learn how to make music?
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:48:14 pm »
When I was just starting to produce, I would just get my hands dirty in Ableton and mess around, while watching YouTube tutorials all day. This was about 4 years ago...and that went great, but the only problem - for me personally - was that I got too comfortable with this method of learning alone, and with how much I had learned. I just kinda coasted down that path for a good long while, but realized I could've been working harder and making more progress, so earlier last year I basically decided to start teaching myself all over again and this time I decided to read (mainly because I have 2 jobs with a lot of downtime and limited wifi at both haha). It definitely helped to build on knowledge, and get some creative juices flowing. I also started watching YouTube tutorials again over a wider range of topics (not just massive patches l0l) and even took some notes haha. I think it helps to mix things up.

Here's what I read:

An alright selectionn...
Ableton's music strategy book was perfect. :)
..."Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" was kind of hard to swallow, but it was $0.04 on Amazon and gave me something to do at work, so I figured what the hell and gave it a read haha. I actually learned a lot about the history of the genres that I didn't know though. I liked that. Definitely made me appreciate the art a little more too.

I also read Daniel J. Levitin's "This Is Your Brain On Music" and highly recommend it!

I'm with everyone who has suggested Audio Technica's ATH M50s. I can't say anything about them that hasn't already been said haha, I've had mine for a few years now - they've held up longer than any other pair of headphones i've owned and the quality is amazing. Definitely getting a newer pair of the M50s when these eventually die on me.

Not so much a studio as it is a "music" room in general haha.. :)

One side of the room.. featuring the main "workstation"...

...and the other side of the room.  Featuring an old technics turntable, a combination of 3 record collections I was fortunate enough to receive (mostly my dad's), my boyfriend's guitars (which I do not have the skill to play :( haha), and a recent addition: a little Numark DJ controller, a drawing tablet (if anyone ever needs graphic work done hmu ;)), and a macbook which used to be MartyParty's (featuring the faded signatures of Bro Safari and Antiserum - wooo)!

...This room is like the heaven in my life. <3

Ahh! Actually I did put a bit of distortion on my drums but that's definitely something I gotta work on more. Thanks for the feedback!

"The War of Art" is a good one! I'm gonna have to check out some of the others that have been listed.

This one isn't so much a book on creativity/motivation, but I really enjoyed reading Daniel J. Levitin's "This Is Your Brain On Music". Boreta of The Glitch Mob shared it sometime last year and I think Mat Zo actually posted a pic of it on twitter recently. :) Definitely a good read on the science of music!

Something funky I started writing last spring and finally wrapped up! ...I'm not quite sure what you'd call it tbh, I'd say it's pretty unique.. kind of chill and house-y haha.

Any feedback would be awesome. My biggest concern right now is my mixing and the fact that I have a problem with going overboard and over-cluttering things.. :-[

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Theory for beginners
« on: January 06, 2016, 03:54:28 pm »
If you have an iphone and you're on-the-go a lot you might like these apps for learning basic theory:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/theory-lessons/id493157418?mt=8
(this one is musictheory.net in app form)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/music-theory-practice-by-musicopoulos/id319290362?mt=8
(there's an ear training app that you can get bundled with this one that's pretty handy too).

Unfortunately they're not free, but I found them to be worth the price. I work two jobs and wanted to go back to the basics last year and learn this stuff.. I wanted something simple that I could take with me to work and these did the trick. Well structured and pretty informative.
