Sound Design / Re: Future Bass Moving Saw Lead in Ableton
« on: January 27, 2016, 07:31:49 pm »
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1jCNhQGgFM

I found a pretty decent tutorial on how to make Future bass. Problem is, he is using FL Studio and I use Ableton.

He lays down some chords, fixes a Massive patch for it, then at the 5:27 point in the video, he adds a Fruity Stereo Enhancer and automates the volume, if I'm not mistaken, to give the sound that moving feeling.

Well, how could I achieve this in Ableton? What is the equivalent? If there are multiple ways to achieve it, great, let's hear some of them. I don't have any third party stereo enhancer plugins, so if there is a way to do this inside of Ableton, I'd like to know.

If not, what are some stereo enhancers I can use to achieve this effect? Thanks.

Don't fret about the Stereo Enhancer plug-in. The person in the video never even uses its Haas trick and only automates the volume to achieve that tremolo effect. This can be done in a number of ways depending on your DAW. A simple one-knob gain effect will do just fine. ;)

Seems pretty close to me.

32 notes? or arp setting used?

Neither. Hold down a chord and the LFO with 1/16th rate takes care of it.

Sure, I'll have a go.

Here's my result.

I used Sylenth1 for this one. Surprise, surprise. :)

Part A consists of two saw oscillators with 8 voices each, one slightly more detuned than the other. For more subtle harmonics I mixed in two square oscillators from Part B going into the same filter used in Part A. The filter used in A is a 12dB lowpass with some slight drive to it. This filter is being modulated by LFO 1 where I've chosen the saw envelope and set the rate to 1/16th - the transient shape of this envelope is where your 'pluck' sound comes from.

The "sparklyness" in those Infinitum chords sounds like the "Decimate" distortion module from Sylenth1. The sweet spot for this particular sound is a setting between 3.00-4.00 with around 20% wetness.

After this I brightened things up a little with some EQ and compression. The EQ really brought out the "sparklyness" caused by the distortion:

So yeah, that's about it, here's my preset. Hope you found it informative.  ;D

The part between 0:26 - 0:42 sounds really good. Well done.

And yeah, I'll reiterate what others already have said: the introduced melody at 1:07 sounds very out of place.

I would also like the kick's top-end to be more transient. It sort of drowns in the mix after 1:07. Try using a Transient Shaper on the kick and see what happens. You can also amplify the transients with intricate multi band-compression.

A nice touch for 1:00 or 1:16 would be a long reversed reverb.

Basically, you slap a big reverb with a long decay on your lead bus. Play a staccato note in your track's key and bounce that out. Import it and reverse it. It'll make the arrangement transitions seem more coherent and more interesting harmonically speaking.

If you're going for that 80s sound, I suggest you find some proper TR-707 snares and look into the infamous "gated verb"-technique. Right now I feel like the snare is not meshing well with the vibe you're going for.  ;)

I like how the clean and snappy the kick sounds. It does however stand out a little too much in the mix.

I think this is mainly because of how highpassed the main bass sounds. While it might not be highpassed, it lacks a lot of energy in the lower-mid region. Also there's a lot of unnecessary noise in that upper-high region, try to bus your lead basses together and roll those off gently.

I'm not a fan of atonal, empty build-ups. I think you can do better than just 15 seconds of flanger noise and percs pitching upwards. :)

For this style of track, I suggest studying Dyro's older sound a lot. Drop his tracks in a frequency analyzer like SPAN and study how the frequencies are balanced.

I like this idea. I think it'd be a nice addition to have occasional AMAs... I usually seem to miss them whenever they go down on reddit.

Those on reddit are nice but I feel like those things rarely touch on production related stuff. They often turn into "When are you coming to X? We love you here." etc

we've been discussing a few different ideas, and this was one of them. we working on a few other things that have higher priority, but we're definitely considering doing scheduled producer Q&As!

Cool, cool, cool!  ;D

Congrats on making this forum a reality Mat Zo and everyone else involved. This shit went twitter-rant-to-100-emoji real fast.

Also very cool to see how many already have signed up - and also how many prominent producers are already lurking here besides yourself. So why not every once in a while schedule some kind of "Hello! I am X. This is my music. AMA [Ask Me Anything]." threads where the users can familiarize ourselves with the persons work and ask production/music related questions accordingly?

Just an idea (that might require more work than my description makes it out to be, heh). :)

Sound Design / Re: Bass like Vicetone, or Dubvision?

I think that characteristic bass sound you're talking about is a picked electric bass processed quite heavily with a distortion unit. A sample library from Native Instruments played with Kontakt combined with Guitar Rig for example. You can hear a lot of these sounds on Alesso's older productions.

I think a great starting point for you is to watch this video of Dubvision going through Turn It Around. Make sure to enable subtitles on Youtube. :)

Like people in this thread already have mentioned - do check your track's mono compatibility. Whenever I make a sound in Sylenth1 I tend to crank the "STEREO" knob up too much. I use bx_solo to isolate the mono signal.

Also, in general, use a 100% wet send buss for reverbs and delays. This will help you create a more cohesive and definite "room" for your track. So, don't max out your CPU by having +10 single reverbs from the VSTs working alongside eachother. Unless it's for some crazy sound design insert of course.

Check out Dune 2! Very powerful

I second this! I like the sound of it very much. The default skin is kind of a bummer, though. I use this free skin.
