Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Tips for EQing Analog Synths
« on: January 09, 2016, 08:53:50 am »
I find that when writing things that have a bassline and a thing harmonizing it an octave and third up, it's beneficial to use two different sounds altogether to get more definition. So if you're using a Sub 37 (which I assume from the paraphonic thing), I'd try a patch with more multidrive and harmonics for the bassline and then a softer sound for the harmonizing part.

It's a bit more work and you need to record them in separately, but to me it often makes sense to take care of EQ issues in the earlier stages of production, like writing, arrangement and sound design.

So instead of lowering the threshhold you raise it essentially?

On technical terms you're actually using a ratio that lowers the sound below the threshold, whereas a compressor lowers the sound above. Then set the threshold so that only the loudest part of the drum (the transient) goes above it. Then you can boost the output gain of the band without boosting anything else than just the transient part on that frequency. It's a bit tricky to explain but works really well in practice.

So on Nova GE you'd use a ratio of below 1:1. On Pro-MB you can just choose the expansion mode for the band.

Ok cool! That one is a sound I made on Diva actually, most of the sound comes from the processing. I think I used a fast heavily filtered delay from Soundtoys Little PrimalTap, a long modulated reverb from Valhalla VintageVerb and some Valhalla Shimmer and then slammed it pretty hard with u-he Satin which gives it that slightly distorted tone and glues the reverb nicely.

Tbh those quick arps are mostly about the notes, I usually just draw them in. I mostly use the pentatonic scale and either 16th triplet or 32nd notes.

For mono compatibility and making sure the sounds remain relatively nice in mono, it usually helps a lot to create the wideness at source. If it's a synth, use unison or a wider layer to widen it up. If it's a vocal, double track or use a double tracking plugin like Waves Reel ADT or Revoice. If it's a drum, add another layer.

Also, wideness is above all about perception. If everything in your track is wide, then nothing is. Instead of trying to make your existing sounds wider, try narrowing the ones that don't need to be wide. It really does help. After you have some contrast between your elements, even just boosting wideness on something like the Ozone Imager on your master helps a ton.

Can this be a multi-band expansion topic too? One of my favorite techniques for drums is to boost the "fundamental" of the drum only when the transient hits.

For my snares this is usually at around 200Hz so just boosting there with an EQ would usually sound too boxy, especially if the sample has a longer tail. Using multi-band expansion lets you only boost the initial transient while leaving the rest of the sound untouched.

It also works great for smoothening long drum sample tails that sound too harsh in the top end but nice with the actual drum hit. You can do this with at least the TDR Nova GE and FF Pro-MB

Sound Design / Re: Vocal pitching in logic?

The vocal transformer plugin in Logic sounds pretty good to my ears for monophonic signals. For monophonic signals there's also QuikQuak Pitchwheel (that Lido uses for his pitched vocals) and SoundToys Little AlterBoy (that also has a pretty cool Decapitator-style drive on it)

Hey glad you like the song :) Do you mean the quick synth arpeggio or the "pad"-like atmospheric sound? The latter is a sound called "Abandoned" from Omnisphere if I recall correctly.
