Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: favorite lyricists?
« on: April 17, 2017, 07:21:47 pm »
One of my favorite lyricists is R.A. the Rugged Man (Hip Hop). On his latest album there are a couple songs I really like, but Make You Famous and Still Get Through the Day are lyrically the best I think.

Make You Famous

Still Get Through the Day

Hope you enjoy!

I'm afraid you'll get latency if you don't use an Audio Interface. Fine tuning your Asio settings will help, but I think it will not be enough. However, I don't use Ableton and I have an audio interface for many years now, so maybe there's someone here that can give you a better indication..

Hi

In my opinion Serum is the best for pads/ambient sounds, however I'm a bit biased because I love Serum :) Try to add subtile movements with slowly progressing LFO's or fast LFO's with "smooth" turned up.

Ow, and play with the LFO's and the parameters you place them on, experimenting can always lead to surprising results!

Haha ok no problem :)

Don't have much experience with Ableton so I can't help you any further with that. Maybe you can look in to some VST's that do that, like Gross Beat.

Haha love these kind of tracks! Especially that rolling arp/lead-thingy.

As you say in the description, the drums are pretty basic. I think the track would have more power if the drums are a little bit less basic. But hey, listened it twice now so good job ;)

Sounds nice! The vocals are not really my cup of tea though, but those synths/leads are awesome!

You can set any LFO or ENV on the master output via the Matrix tab. Find the master volume in the destination row and then something like Global (I've no access to Serum now so I can't see what it is exactly.) If you don't understand the Matrix tab, init preset and set up 1 lfo to a knob and see how that shows in the Matrix tab. Shouldn't be that hard :)

To control volume you can also use the 2 volume knobs from the oscillators, this way you can control each oscillator with a different LFO or envelope. Or control just one and let the other be.

Hope this helps!

Hi, just like Mussas and vinceasot say, try sampling a bunch of sounds.

However, yesterday I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6c-j6GS824, it's about 3 techniques for creating trap sounds with Serum. I think it's not the best video, but his approach on creating trap sounds can give you inspiration on how to do it yourself.

If you're using FL Studio, you can try Hardcore. It combines multiple effects and is mostly used for guitar (I think), however, I experiment a lot with it on different sounds. It can give you some interesting results.

Awesome initiative!

I would like to hear some ambient/chill samples. Maybe some long stretched flutes?

Also, I will look up some of my own samples and DM you later this month ;)

I see that the question is already a bit old, but for others with the same question:

In FL Studio it's best to use edison when saving samples so you can clean up your sample (you can also delete or add loop points in edison). After saving a sample and throwing it back in FL, you can change the root note in the envelope tab. (Click on your sample in the pattern view and go to the second tab) FL's default root note is C, but when you have a sample at D, you can change it to D3 for example so that your sample is at D3 in the piano roll.

It's like Marrow Machines says, every DAW has it's own work flow and you need to find one that fits yours.

I started with Cubase and now I work with FL Studio. I've also worked with Ableton and Reason, but in my opinion and for my work flow FL Studio is the best and Ableton second. So I recommend you try those two.

Sound Design / Re: bass distortion
« on: December 23, 2016, 09:32:41 pm »
This sounds like nothing more than a square-wave based synth patch. The reason you are hearing distortion is that a distorted signal is a regular signal with the peaks chopped off to resemble a square wave, but this sound is cleaner and less crunchy than an actual distorted signal. It sounds like there might be either some noise or a more heavily detuned layer underneath but if you want to create a very similar sound I would say a square wave is going to be your starting point and forget about distortion. Often times we over-complicate things because we think that something that sounds so good to us MUST have gone through a rigorous and meticulous process of creation when 90% of the time it's just something really simple.

I 100% agree with you. Especially with bass you should follow the KISS principle: Keep It Simple Stupid  ;)

I'm curious if you succeeded recreating the sound. Can you let us know?

I want to improve at playing the piano.. I can hit some chords now, but that's it xD

Maybe you could try to layer a bass you like, with a square/saw like synth. Then only distort that second bass slightly, or maybe don't even distort it at all.
