Its probably not as clean as you think just reverb and delay make it sound airy. eqing well also obvious though. But id say most of the rest of it is in the sound design you can hear like chorus flangers ect in there which can also tame it a bit also he is using analogue so your choice of synth matters.

Sound Design / dumb question

Are the drums in packs mostly synthesized or are they sampled from tracks or layers with organic drums pretty sure its synthesized but im asking to make sure?

The synth is pretty dope but it gets a bit repetitive apart from 2:50 i think which is sick. I like the drums too.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Compression on synths
« on: October 23, 2016, 02:13:25 am »
A lot producers use multiband compression to push the bass frequencies up and make the sound fatter as well as using the compressor to eq the sound like give more presences to the highs cause a lot of synths dont have good highs. I think a lot of people say like lay off the compression but you can pretty hard with the compression and eqing on synths not so much drums and organic sounds but synths. As for the compressor its usually just to glue sounds athough eqing/sound design probably more important.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Hardest genres/easiest
« on: October 22, 2016, 04:38:27 am »
Whats the hardest genre you've tried to produce/wana produce(The one that was just difficult)?
I haven't been producing long but for the hardest is glitch hop just cause the amount of sound design you need to make those chopped up basses plus its really musical with weird chords and fast paced melodies.(also electro like madeon is hard as hell.)

The second for me would be tropical house even though there isn't much sound design it seems like its more a musician genre because the melodies are really hard to get the vibe and yeah i really suck at this genre lol.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / good sound design?
« on: September 25, 2016, 05:04:42 am »
I've been looking around at people talking about good sound design and i see people saying stuff like skrillex's sound design isn't good its heavy loud crap and then they like say like tipper is good at sound design https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6kTGhJIMgw I mean its very subjective but too me this stuff just sounds retarded i mean its better than what i make but like it doesn't sound original or cool or well mixed.

Too me good sound design is memorable sounds or sounds that are really well defined not a total mess where you just flip some knobs with an analog synth and do minimum processing. I feel like well defined sounds are the hardest to make like people like virtual riot or noisia really know what they are doing so they make really big fat sounds, someone just twisting knobs can't do this because the sounds won't cover the frequency spectrum or at least match at different frequencies. I saw deadmau5 also was talking about how people ignore grit and bass to try and to make good sounds you need both not just a random modulation drowned in reverb. Which is totally true i always see these people trying to make deadmau5 style music but they just go overly soft it becomes a boring mess of what some people consider good sound design but too me all good sounds have power and character behind them even good pads or bells.

Who do you guys think are good sound designers?

ps songs with good pads?

I have been trying to do this short of thing lately something i have found is that sticking a multiband compressor like ott in the main bus and moving the depth up to like 50% and boosting the highs by quite a lot seems to flatten the sound out pretty well. Then i usually use massive and sylenth1 and just use heaps of freaking unison and change up the octaves on each patch and detune the high octaves way more than the lows then on the patches i low pass them till i feel like it still has the power but very high is gone like it should keep all the energy just remove the crap off the top and then i put high passed noise in the same patch. i think you just only use like 2-3 of these patches then i find the one that sounds the widest and use maximus to make it wider and if u have mid side eq then u can cut the mids out. I usually put a bare nexus in there too since it sounds really good in mono. Also i put side chained reverb and delay which is really important to make it sound roomy like really important. For melodic dubstep i put the reverb time high and future bass i put it low. Something else i might do is stick some kind of atmosphere sound in there like a trumpet or a pad or something and sometimes i stick a super high screechy lead. Also the highs are really important to get that power you are looking for so boost them with ott or layering. Don't overdo the layers just check if they are actually adding to the sound. Scoop your lows out fully too and side chain that bitch and you should be getting something not shit lol :D

ps use a transient shaper because sometimes i get way to much pluck or not enough punch and it makes everything sound seperate. turn off restarts and retrigs in the synths unless really needed also

Idk but i never feel for filled if i sat and watched anime or played video games all day but if i spent the whole day making music or drawing i feel really good even if i didn't improve and it sucked i just feel one day i might be able to create things that are from the heart and i feel if u reach that point, i think ur life is probably better than anyone elses. I just look at Porter Robinson and its like he doesn't care how famous he is or if some of his songs sound retarded but he can make something that separates him from pretty much every other person. So for me maybe i might not reach the point where i ever get super good at something but least in a few years ill be able do something when im bored and be proud of it rather than wasting time and crap.

Mixing/Mastering / OTT compressor
« on: August 30, 2016, 01:11:18 am »
I was wondering what the depth knob on the ott compressor actually does i want to use another multi band compressor to achieve the same effect but i dont get what is actually happening. Can someone tell me what it is doing to the sound like why it sounds flat and also how it does it thanks.
