WIPs / Stuck on a Stevie Wonder remix

Ive been working on this for a while, and feel like it's missing something, not sure what exactly.

Haven't really put FX on it yet or mastered it, so keep that in mind.

Lemme know if there's anything I can improve on, overall pretty happy with what ended up happening with this one!

At around 41 seconds in I would like to hear a chord progression that counters what has been going on, and maybe even filter those chords to build some tension.

So do you mean add a counter chord progression that plays at the same time or at a different time as the one at 41 seconds?

I only ask because I introduce the first chord progression at that time mark.

Any other other suggestions on how to vary the song up a little bit would be awesome!

But otherwise, this is some of the best feedback I've gotten so far, thank you so much!

Haven't had a chance to mix and master completely, but would like any feedback on the basic melodic and rhythmic ideas.

Thanks!

My favorite remix off of the Worlds Remixed album. I think they really capture the feel of the original track while also modifying it really well!

I think a Cashmere Cat/Wave Racer collab would be so tight. Both of those guys have such a developed sound it'd be awesome to see a blend of both their styles.

Pretty easy answer:
Porter Robinson and Madeon.

I'd advocate for Madeon and Oliver in addition to this great idea.

Gramatik comes to mind, so does GRiZ and The Floozies, but those acts lean more on the funky side, whereas I've always associated Oliver with more a disco and 80s feel, similar though. Another one would be Madeon, I love Oliver's remix of Madeon's "You're On" (https://soundcloud.com/madeon/youre-on-ft-kyan-oliver-remix). Also some of Mat Zo's more funky/disco-y music, AND Lemaitre too!

I looooovvvvvveeeeee Oliver though, definitely one my favorite groups out there, wish more people were aware of them (or at least where I'm from hah). It took me a little bit to think of something similar, because Oliver has such a distinct sound, that aspect of their music is something any producer should aspire to, imo!

WIPs / Re: Tried Future bass or bass twerk.

I like the rhythms throughout the song, although I’m a bit biased because I like Jersey Club and those types of genres.

Overall I think there should be more melodic ideas throughout the song, or, with the ones you have already, make them more prominent to juxtapose the parts where the focus isn’t on the melody, but the rhythm and bass. You have some melodies throughout the song, but they don’t seem to stand out as much as they could.

(Keep in mind, I tend to like more melodic types of music, so once again that’s where my critiques come from.)

Last thing would be the ending, it ends pretty abruptly, you might want to consider making a longer outro.

Just my opinions, take it or leave it. Good initial ideas though!

Actually , i feel the same with you.  I think it should be added like some stabs or chord or pad on the some point. but i was like, quite hesitate to add synthesizing that would make sound awful... anyways, thank you for your comment. and your music is good, i wish i could be your level. x)  have a great day there !

Wow, that's a great compliment! Thanks so much!

Just keep working, you'll figure it out!

The bass at the drop is phat af, I like it!

Don't know if you were trying to have that disco feel, but this track grooves pretty hard at certain points, nice job!

I love this type happy, melodic type of music (trying make something similar myself), so I like a lot of the ideas, and the general feel of the track you have so far.

Although it sounds a bit hollow to me. Making the bass a bit more prominent could help with this and could fill the track up a little bit more, so to speak. A slap bass type of sound could work really well in this, like what Wave Racer does in the song Flash Drive (linked below, listen to 1:32 and on to know what type of sound I mean).

WIPs / Re: New Song, New(ish) Producer looking for some feedback!

Sounds like I need to work on my mixing abilities, which I was pretty sure was the case haha.

Although, I'm having trouble, conceptually, understanding the process of how to mix properly. I know that it's mostly about EQing, compressing, and using limiters to make all of the elements sound good together,

Some concepts are correct but you're mistaking volume balance, panning, stereo image control (ie width, mono vs stereo) to be more important than EQ, compression, and lord have mercy the limiter.

After you get the volume balance, panning, and stereo image control, i'd suggest you eq first then see if your sound needs compression. I wold stick to that process pretty religiously.

You don't need a limiter on almost ANY of your tracks, and if you do, you need to reconsider it's input gain or turn the channel down. You'll loose so much character from your sound source if you think that strapping a limiter and cranking the gain/volume will make it sound good. No, that's how good sounds die early.

So maybe I should go by the tenant of "if it sounds good, it is good" rather than thinking there is a correct "way" to mix?

The tip about doing EQ first is a good tip, thanks!

And sorry to potentially cause confusion, I don't have a limiter on any individual tracks, only on the master channel. It seems to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that limiters might have more to do with the mastering part of the track, rather than the mixing phase.
