Sound Design / Re: Porter Robinson, Madeon Bass
« on: January 06, 2016, 03:40:13 pm »
A lot of basslines, especially porters, are a few saw osc's detuned slightly to get that phasing/almost detuned sound. from there its about modulation of filters and distortion
madeon said awhile back that he does a ton of post processing, which would be a similar process

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Finding a key to write in
« on: January 06, 2016, 03:37:44 pm »
Personally the way I write is always starting in Eb Maj because thats the key i know how to play best on the piano, i know how to improvise on it and its my most comfortable form to play in. What I do is I will flesh out the chords and melody and then transpose to a key that fits the song better. To find this it will be dependent on many factors, the most important ones will probably be your vocalist's range if youre working with vocals, and your sub bass range if youre just working instrumentally. depending on how wide your sub notes vary you might find that you arent really staying within the Sub frequencies, or youre going too low to hear your sub, if either of these happen you can transpose the song up or down a few semitones accordingly, if BOTH of these happen, it means that your sub is too erratically moving and you should revisit the notes youre playing :P

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Sub-Bass/Bassline Theory

typically your sub should follow your chords, it should be the bass note of the chord (root, first inversion, second inversion, ect) Typically its helpful to either write your melody to your chords or write your chords to your melody but if you try to tackle them completely separately thats how youre going to end up with clashing tones and dissonance you dont want.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Is music theory really important ???
« on: January 06, 2016, 03:30:54 pm »
I think that honestly, if you're going into music with the mentality of making music, then yes, theory is going to be your toolkit. A musician without music theory is like an untrained carpenter. You can work your way around thorugh feeling and what 'sounds right' but its going to be a LOT of trial and error that will take up way more of your time than if you invest in learning theory. sure if you just wanna make beats or something then by all means go ahead and focus on your production and dont pay attention to theory because youre not going to need to know a ton about borrowed chords or key changing or anything.
if you want to be good, then no you wont need it, if you want to be GREAT then yes, learn it, use it, love it.
no one 'likes' going to the basics and learning the beginner seemingly unimportant stuff but if you can properly apply it, it'll be what sets you apart from a 'beat maker' to a musician. IMO

mix is missing its lowend and the main synth might be a bit loud compared to the drums but ye sounds nice :)

WIPs / Re: Intro that i made for a project that I'm working on.
« on: January 06, 2016, 03:31:30 am »
im not sure if it needs something more as much as it might need to just be less as a whole. as an intro to an album you should probably cut down the length of the track to maybe 2 minutes, tops. I think this can benefit you in a few ways, for one it wont be too daunting to listen to as a new listener and itll also mean you can make do with what you already have to fill out the energy and vibe for the album!

really cool composition man, the mix is a little crunched and muddy right now imo, cant tell what exactly it is but it could use a little more sparkle and upper register imo. again awesome composition especially at that section around 1:00 i'd flesh it out to make it a little cleaner that turns into chaotic instead of just pure chaos right from the start. maybe take that synth youre chopping in a clean form and then gate/sidechain it to the cut bits? im not sure how your tracks and busses look haha :P
haha i can relate to the plane thing :P no problem man good luck!
was definitely planning to smooth that glitchy part out, thanks for reminding me

re: the mix, the majority of this was composed on an airplane using earbuds lmfao, i won't be able to really fix the mix until i get back to my dorm (home for winter break right now). then again my speakers aren't the best so who knows how much that'll help

good idea with the gating into glitch, i'll have to try that

thanks for the feedback dude

WIPs / Re: Polymetric - Synapse (WIP mix, almost finished)
« on: January 06, 2016, 03:26:27 am »
percussion is cool in the intro but i feel that it isnt properly mixing when the synth comes in, and might even benefit from not being there for that section
your sidechain/volume modulation is a little heavy and the kick is a bit too loud. Honestly i think that the mix as a whole could use some work but the ideas are fire man keep it up! :D

only thing id say that hasnt been said already is that the autopan is a little bit much

This might just be my headphones, but I'd add some more bass to the kick, and lower the volume of the clapsnarething. That very first part is great, I really love it.

It's definitely not just your headphones! And yeah, that clapsnare is giving me some trouble. I want it to really cut through the mix without it being too loud, and still keep the dynamics of it. I can't seem to lower the volume without taking away the.. "smack" or punch of it. Any advice?
Thank you!

I'd say layer it with a cleaner future snare or something and then mix them IMO

yea I love the foundation, flesh it out with some melodic plucks or perc to give it some variation :D

right now your mix is really being dominated by those chords and your sub, i personally think itd be beneficial to turn down the sub and focus a little bit more on your 6HZish range. I reccomend reading up on the Fletcher Munson curve, it shows how we perceive volume and its a good place to start learning how to make your mix crisper :) composition is nice and sound design is cool too!

I'm wondering about how the energy and build up and through 4:00 sounds to people :)
