Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Monitor and Sub Calibration
« on: January 24, 2016, 07:32:17 am »
I am having trouble using my subwoofer (Mackie MR10 MK3) along with my Tannoy Reveal 501A Monitors. I know that mixing brands and monitors isn't a very good start, considering that monitors are usually supposed to be used with a sub made by the same manufacturer (and essentially the same product line), but this is what I managed to get my hands on.

I calibrate my monitors using an SPL meter... (okay, more like an SPL meter app on my phone) by placing the SPL meter in the "sweet spot" and then playing pink noise through the monitors. I get the monitors to reach the same SPL level on the meter (individually) and this gave me a pretty even sound from the monitors, but i just recently got the subwoofer and I am trying to figure out the best way to calibrate it using the same method.

I did some research on how to calibrate the sub with this method and I used the SPL levels that the tutorial had suggested, but it seems that I am getting too much bass when mixing down without the sub, and then checking with the sub again. When mixing without the subwoofer, I find the place where the bass sounds best. When I turn the subwoofer on and monitor with the subwoofer, the sub frequencies in my mix are overbearing. I do not feel as if it is a problem with the level of the bass in the track, I believe I just have my subwoofer turned up too loud.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to to find the correct volume the subwoofer should be at when calibrating with an SPL meter? Or a ratio of how loud the subwoofer should be to the monitors? I am pretty lost at it and I am pretty much just taking shots in the dark with the leveling.

Thanks!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / NI Komplete Kontrol keyboard with Ableton
« on: January 15, 2016, 08:37:55 am »
I'm posting this not because I think it actually exists, but more as a rant. KK has recently opened up to support 3rd party plugins, I can now control all aspects of Serum and other VST's from the Komplete Kontrol software using my KK keyboard.
What I would like to see is the same kind of integration with Ableton Live and other DAWs. For quite a while, I used an M-Audio axiom keyboard. The keyboard (and i am sure plenty of other keyboards do this) would allow users to control native Ableton plugins, such as the EQ 8 and compressors, simply by clicking on the plugin they wanted to affect and then turning the knobs on the keyboard. The flaw i always saw in this is that I could never tell what I was changing, since the keyboard did not have screens that told the users which knob they were turning. With the screens on the Komplete Kontrol keyboard, I believe this function would be much more realistic and improve the user flow dramatically. If there is a way to control Ableton native plugins the same way you can control NI native plugins from the keyboard, I would love that.
Does anyone know of a way to set the keyboard/ableton up to work in such a manner? And if not, who wants to start a petition!?

Anyway, thanks for reading guys

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Vinyl Player Help
« on: January 09, 2016, 06:11:55 pm »
I recently got an Audio Technica LP60 (ATLP60) turntable to enjoy my vinyl records and I am using my studio gear to route it out to my studio monitors. I wanted to be able to route it directly out to my monitors without having to switch cables and redo my entire setup just to listen to my records. The record player is routed into the input of a Scarlett 2i2 using the RCA to 1/8" converter the record player came with, then a 1/8" to 1/4" converter into the 1/4" input of the 2i2. The 2i2 is switched to Direct Monitor, making it so that I don't have to route the audio through a DAW in order to get the sound out to my monitors. The problem I am having is that certain records sound odd. The instruments are often louder than the vocals, sounding similar to when headphones aren't fully plugged into a headphone port when listening to music from a phone. I am not sure if this is due to the fact that I don't have the audio routed out to a sound amplifier or if this is because the cord that came attached to the LP60 is damaged, or even if this is just how the certain records are supposed to sound. Would a regular audio interface (such as my 2i2) properly amplify the sound or do I need to purchase an amplifier to route to before the interface? Or does the problem lie within the cords/adapters I am using to get the sound out?

I hope I explained everything thoroughly enough to show how the LP60 is set up currently, any help/advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
