Sound Design / Drum and Bass Percussion Arrangement/Sound Selection
« on: January 12, 2016, 03:03:23 am »
Hey folks,

I'm working on a dnb tune and I've got the basic idea for composing kicks and snares...but I really lack finding the other rhythmic elements for the percussion in dnb. For example, here is a very bare loop I just started.

^not mixed for shit. sorry.

How on earth can I learn what to do with hi-hats besides what you hear here? What frequency range do I need to be filling with those elements? Any advice on picking samples for hats and percussion?

I love the kind of metallic shaker sound in Different by MRSA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp0Qt5y9NS0
^I need more of that stuff.

I know it's a huge question and I'm gonna keep pressing forward on my own...but...any help?

Thanks!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / What's the consensus on Reason?
« on: January 10, 2016, 07:48:18 pm »
Hey guys,

I've been producing in Reason for a few years now (not consistently, spent 4.5 years in engineering school >_>) and I never seem to hear much about Reason in the EDM world. I heard Kill the Noise used it for a time but it seems all the big time producers eventually move on to a different DAWs.

Reason's modularity is fun but it seems to lack what I'm looking for. For example, I wanted to replicate this bass sound from SeamlessR, but I do not have a wave shaper like he uses at 1:16:

I spent an hour making a wave shaper by combining two maelstroms but it was not as flexible as that plugin SeamlessR pulled up and used in an instant.

What do you think?

WIPs / hold it tight 'lil' john | hat loop help [neuro/dnb]
« on: January 10, 2016, 08:29:25 am »
Hey guys, here's a neurofunk-ish track I'm working on. I feel like the hat loop just lacks the groove I hear in other dnb tracks. What ways can I make the hat rhythm stand out? Maybe I just need another percussive element to compliment it?

I have thick skin, I suck at producing, and I am passionate about getting better. Rip this subpar track to pieces for me. :]

Thank you.
