Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: What/Who inspired you to start?
« on: January 08, 2016, 08:35:08 pm »
i saw this video (being a trackmania fan at the time) and instantly fell in love with the song (noisia - stigma). started listening to a bunch of dnb and dubstep.
a while later (~march 2012), found LMMS, made a bunch of terrible house. bought fl studio in november 2012 after seeing some seamlessr videos, and it's just gone from there basically.

when i was younger (before i knew electronic music existed, when i was like 10) i was into nu metal and played some guitar, i was never very good at it though. in recent years i've gotten into prog metal, idk if i would ever try to write any though. i wasn't really interested in writing my own stuff until i found edm.

Sound Design / Re: What's your opinion on Presets ?
« on: January 07, 2016, 06:46:12 pm »
i much prefer not to use presets, i design all my patches by hand usually. but (especially for beginners) presets can still be a useful tool to get closer to a sound that you don't have experience making, and there's nothing wrong with using them.
i do save my own patches as presets and load them up later and tweak them further, which helps to give a kind of stylistic continuity to my tracks sometimes. but i still don't generally use presets made by other people.

WIPs / Re: 175 bpm tune v.1.75

wow.
the snare from 5 minutes on kinda bothers me, it doesn't really fit imo, but otherwise this track is incredible. really well done!

i don't listen to a lot of this style, so take what i say with a grain of salt i guess. i'm liking what i'm hearing, though.
i feel like the atmosphere could be improved a bit by having some long, reasonably quiet reverb on the clap, just to make it linger a bit more. not in your face, though.
the kick doesn't feel quite right, though i don't think it's a mixing issue. the sample is a bit too clicky for this style i feel, maybe one with a bit less high end click would be more suited to the track. as it is, it sounds too much like a house kick to me.
overall, a nice experience to listen to though. the composition is nice, and it flows pretty well. so, good job on that. :)

wonky panorama with bad lighting:

surprisingly non-music looking, except for the mic and interface. probably because of my lack of monitors. (i produce entirely with headphones)
not shown is an ibanez rg5ex1 guitar, an akai mpk mini, and some random 2.1 speaker system my grandparents gave me.
someday i want modular stuff. but it costs money, which is an issue.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: What is your favorite sample pack

the free ones that Neurohop Forum . . . have put out!
this, for sure. also, the drum samples that come with breaktweaker are really good.

Sound Design / Re: Metallic Sounds
« on: January 06, 2016, 08:12:21 pm »
a lot of people have already given you some solid answers, but if you own harmor, try messing with the prism option. also, resampling samples that already have a metallic sound can yield really interesting results.
one of my favorite ways of messing up a sound is with chorus, flanger, or phaser with no time variables, just completely static. phaser in particular sometimes gives a really hollow metallic sound if you get the settings just right.
