Sticky Puppy

Not too sure about this name... ;D

Actually just Séguin sounds cool...

That would be a pretty cool producer name for sure.

Sound Design / Re: Remaking Madeon

Trying to remake Madeon stuff is like trying to cut your hair using only your fingers. It's a tough task.

Quite liked that Imperium bass though. I know some of the notes were off but the actual sound's not bad at all. Might have a go myself.

It's true that nothing can be perfect but it would be good to know if a unique idea is weird in a good or bad way. Some tracks have really odd sounds that have become really popular. I've made some wacky sounds before but I think they'd just annoy people instead (that's happened a few times before).

Even through all the uncertainty nothing will stop me creating. Can be frustrating at times but it's still fun.

I'd say be as confident about your music as you can be. At least you, the producer, should like what you are doing - otherwise it wouldn't make sense to make music if you don't enjoy it, right? . Self criticism and perfectionism can be useful and healthy to a certain extend, but don't overdo it - and don't let it get you down!!

I can't pretend I'm not getting better. Knowing what makes a piece of music 'good' though is so difficult to define it's hard to see these improvements.

Definitely. It's still one of my favourite synths even compared with the more expensive ones.

It helps a lot if you have a collection of custom made synth presets that you know sound pretty good. You can just pick something from there and tweak them if you need to. I'd leave certain sessions for purely making sounds that you can use instead of wasting time doing it when you just want to get a composition done.

Seeing your self improve would be a start.
No matter what you do, you are going to suck at it in the beginning. It may not take long to get better for some things, but producing takes YEARS. Keep all your finished track, and just listen to them and compare them to your current tracks, see the difference. Some people aren't patient enough to know that this is going to take a lot of fucking time.
IMO you need the passion to produce, otherwise it's going to be a tough journey.

I get what you're saying. I mean I've been producing for 5 years but I'm never happy with my stuff. I'm always wanting to go up a level. There's still a long journey ahead though so that's promising. I'm not trying to 'make it' I just want to be able to listen to my stuff and feel proud to share it.

I'm sure we've all had this feeling. You listen to your stuff and think it's crap. I used to make music like crazy and not even thinking about the consequences. Now I just cringe while listening to my released stuff.

The weird thing is when I'm making a track I think it's going pretty good. It's only until I export it when I start to notice things I don't like about it. The doubt starts to creep in. I know I've heard worse stuff than mine before but I've also heard much better stuff too.

My question is how do you keep yourself positive about what you make and your progression as a producer?

I never exactly planned to make music. This has probably helped a lot because in the early days of producing I was completely unaware of how difficult it could be to make music. In school I began using Cubase in music lessons. It made me realise I could make music without even being able to play an instrument which was completely game changing for me. We only did composition for the first few years before even touching synths. It was the slower path but made producing much less intimidating in the end.

Later on I completely dived into producing electronic music. This was also when I started listening to the electronic genres more often. Strobe by deadmau5 just blew me away and it still does. If I had to name only one track that completely inspired me it would be that one.

It's strange how the tracks that take the least time to make can often be your favourite ones. I find if I'm getting past the 15 hour stage everything becomes forced. Don't know how people can stay motivated on a track for much longer but whatever works for you I guess.

I find it really important to get my ideas down fast. If I don't have a good structure set out in the first few hours I'm pretty much screwed. The track doesn't have to be anywhere near finished but it's a lot easier to add parts into your set out structure than to create the next section from nothing. Get the foundation sorted and the rest should fall into place nicely.

If you like trance you'll probably like this free synth "T-Force Alpha Plus". It's surprisingly good considering it's free.
