Finished Tracks / Sync Zephyr - Bonsai

I put a lot of weird ideas into this one.

WIPs / Silly Progressive House

I think I'm getting the hang of properly mixing things down. There's no actual 'drop' or anything to this yet, but I enjoy where things are going right now. Something that's changing for sure is the sweep around 0:55, because that's just a placeholder. I might also trim the actual length a bit to break the repetition. Let me know how it sounds!

WIPs / Re: Trying to make Deep House... Is it good?

The droning sound at the beginning doesn't fit well in the track at all. I would recommend tuning it, leveling/EQing it, or just straight up removing it if absolutely necessary. There's too much reverb on everything; reverb is most effective when you have only one or two instruments with it to make them stand out. As it is, it sounds like everything in the track has reverb, and waaaaay too much of it at that, which makes everything sound kind of drowned out. That said, however, the composition sounds pretty solid and the sound design is really interesting!

I've been working on this for a couple nights now. This has probably been my project with the best productivity:time ratio. I'm still not really sure how it sounds relative to other tracks, so any feedback, as well as straight-up opinions, would be super rad. Thanks!

WIPs / Re: Any ideas on how I can progress this track?
« on: March 13, 2016, 03:54:04 am »
The melody and the pads don't sound like they're following the same chord progression, and as a result, sound like they're clashing. The transition at around the 40 second mark makes no sense; you need some kind of progression leading up to that to make it work. The vocals stick out like a sore thumb, and if you're trying to do something like Bloom, you need to really work on getting them on point. I would suggest finishing the production part of this track, and redoing the vocals with everything, so you have a better idea of where the whole track is going.

ODESZA's tracks are very controlled and involve a lot of progression within a theme, which you can hear very well in Bloom. If you're looking for inspiration for the vocals, ODESZA put out instrumental versions of all their tracks on In Return, so you can compare and study the versions of Bloom with and without vocals and see how tightly the instrumentals and the vocals compliment each other. Listening to the instrumental might also be a source for inspiration on where to take this track.

I dig the sound of the lead synths a lot! I don't think you have much to worry about there.

This is really imaginative!

The piano and the flute at the beginning need to be EQed to better fit in the mix. Also try adding some reverb to the flute and the second piano (the one at around 0:40) cause they sound kinda barren as is. Maybe add some ambient noises at the section at 1:40, anything that touches around the high end, to tie that part over. If you're going for an orchestral theme, layering string instruments (or anything within their general spot in the audio spectrum) would be a good way to make this sound "fuller".

I really like the drop, though! Reminds me of Mura Masa - Lotus Eater. Only criticism is that there could maybe be a biiiit more in the high end department.  Overall, I'd say that working on EQing your instruments and giving some of them varying levels of reverb will make this sound more ineresting.

I like it, but how did you managed sound staging? Is everything stereo?

Just a few things. Should I change some of that?

Started this last night. I'm looking for ways to make it more interesting, because it's sounding kinda 'flat' right now.

I feel like the hi-hats should be pitched up a bit; they sound kinda out of place as hey are right now. I really really like the progression though! Something you could also try is adding different amounts of reverb on some of the percussion and leads.

The drop seems fine, but if you're trying to fix the buildup, having it be quieter than the drop isn't usually enough, especially as extreme as it is here; drops also usually involve a change in dynamic range as well. I don't think you have much to worry about composition-wise, though! Maybe consider adding some reverb (and possibly some delay) on the pluck synth.

That intro is really pretty. <3 I could go to sleep to it right now tbh. (1:21AM)
Not so many highs at first which gives it that calming effect. Love the ambience you have as well in the background. :) Water and birds is it? As well as something else.

What is that after the intro? Are you using an arpeggiator for those chords or just playing them in 16th notes?

The piano with the nature sounds in the intro is just sampled from the intro in the original track. Yeah, I just used 16th notes for the lead synth; arpeggios in Harmor are kind of an intricate process so I just made a plucky type thing.

This track inspired me to do something fun, so I made this! Any feedback would be really appreciated. I've been pushing myself to develop my composition and mixing skills recently, and I feel like now I'm making more progress than ever!

Somehow the sidechaining at around the 3:38 mark seems off-beat from the actual track. Maybe try tweaking it a little bit. Also, the piano at ~4:03 sounds a bit intrusive and doesn't sit the best in the mix, but I bet if you EQ and/or level it in a nice way it'll sound really good. The buildup is honestly so great though. Good stuff!

I'm not sure if the part at around the ~0:48 mark is a stylistic choice for it to sound kind of minimal, but maybe add something like sub bass there to add some style & interest to it. This track could really benefit from more layers in general. The composition is really solid though!
