Mixing/Mastering / Backing Vocals

Hey guys.
Been analysing one of my favourite artists Jordan Rakei and i've noticed his backing vocals are always so tight. They sound so thin, yet really present in the mix, always allowing his main vocal to be in the forefront. I know this is a pretty vague question, but if anybody has any decent mixing tips in general for mixing backing vox that would be great.
