WIPs / Progressive house idea. Almost there but I'd love some feedback.
« on: November 12, 2016, 01:54:22 am »
Any advice in terms of musical ideas or mixing is much appreciated.  The mix sounds so much worse on soundcloud though.

Thanks man.  Ya the snare is flat on purpose cause I have the drums band-passed a bit (except for the kick) to give them that roomy effect.  Let me know if there's anything you want feedback on

This was a work in progress I found while cleaning up an old HDD.  Decided to polish it off a bit an post it.  Happy to exchange feedback here or on Soundcloud.

I just wanna ask... is the name actually "Untitled 22?" or is this just the 22nd song you haven't had a chance to write a name for. Because that is such a great name, sincerely.

I would agree that 1:45 sounds a little funny with the sidechaining. Also maybe the riser lifting to 2:30 should have a progressing highpass filter sweeping up the low end and increasing progressively, to make the drop (which seriously is beautiful) hit harder. This is a beautiful song dude!

Haha the name is untitled 22 just cause I never actually named the project file and its the 22nd version I saved.  When I bounced to mp3 it just took the name from the project file.  In the latest version of the track I already did what you said in hi-passing the riser.  The initial note sounded out of key as it a started and became bent anyway.  Thanks for your feedback.

To me the kick doesn't sound that out of place.  Honestly replacing the kick in a track after you're used to it can be very hard but what I'll usually do is use something like Sonic Academy Kick and make a really clean sine click thats in the key of my track.  From there you can layer it out with what you like instead of just swapping in random samples hoping to find one that fits.  In this case you could also try layering the kick you already have with a hi-hat, crash, or clap with some reverb.

A lot of great ideas, The overall sound is great, I would just add details and automate some things to keep it interesting. However, where it lacks is song structure. Like 1:45 just starts sidechaining the chords but it does nothing with it.

Perfect.  Just the kinda feedback I'm looking for. Thanks.

Not sure why the link didn't work.  I re-uploaded it as private track:

Overall I'd say work on your mix.  The lead in the drop takes up the whole mix and clashes with the other elements making it sound muddy.  Try a high pass at around 150hz on your musical elements except for your bass.

Im not listening on monitors so its hard to really judge the mix but the idea itself isn't bad for this type of track.  The first two bars on the drop are the busiest in terms of rhythm for the lead.  If it was me I'd probably switch that up to introduce the idea and then mess with it.

I second that this is really raw to be asking for feedback. More of an idea than a WIP.  Though in terms of mix I would work on the dynamics.  The bass itself sounds squished where as the drums are bit all over the place.  Usually in a track like this you'd want the bass to have a bit of a bounce-y feel to it with the side chain.

This is just one of those ideas where I listened to it too many times and grew bored of it. It's definitely on the simple side too.  Just looking for thoughts on it from anybody cause I personally really enjoy making this style of music but friends never really seem to respond to it when playing it out compared to my other stuff.
