WIPs / Re: iZotope 5 **Help Needed**
« on: February 11, 2017, 08:21:50 am »
what dont you understand about izotope in particular? . imo focus more on your mixing... I feel like you need to tighten up the bass and kick drum on the second drop, like make that section more defined.

when you have a good mix, then you can use izotope for master eqing, so adding some high frequancies etc... ( just small adjustments ), compression, stereo imaging just to again add or remove some width from specific bands, and then maximizer to add some loudness.

I suck at explaining things, so hopefully I helped you and didnt confuse you even more :D

WIPs / Re: Beat in progress | Downtempo / lo-fi sort of beat
« on: February 22, 2016, 05:19:26 am »
its pretty nice, but one of the things that put me off a bit, was that oneshot sample at 0:30 ( it repeats throughout the song ), I think its a bit to loud, and suggest you side chain it a bit to the kick drum or something.. its just to out there.. this is my opinion though if you like how it is, then by all means keep it like that :) its a pretty neat track

like what the guy above me said, the vocals are too loud, also for the second bit of the song try add more to the percussion or  change it up a bit... just to keep the drive of the song.. pretty nice song :)

could you tell me which point of the song you hear these weird parts ? i might have missed it cause iv heard the song so sososos many times now..
Sure. Having listened closer, there's that atmospheric chord thing in the background that seems to be causing quite a few of the problems - it kinda sounds like it's detuned in itself (i.e. it's not actually hitting notes on the scale but is between notes).

It's particularly noticeable at:

2:08
2:31
2:45 (this one not so much but it's there)
2:56
3:30
4:04
5:26-5:36

The first and last ones at least seem to be because of that chord in the background.. the others it seems like kind of a mix of things. I think changing or taking out that background chord would fix a lot of this, and then it would be easier to tell if the other bits were clashing.

I like the chords themselves though, it's an interesting progression and it works, so I would change the other things around it.

thanks so much for the tip :p , i usually get hyped when i find a weird chord and have a habit of forcing it in my songs.. thanks again! ^-^

you can feel the low end a bit, but the kick lacks presence, especially the attack.. try maybe increasing the mids or high mids, maybe layering it with a different kick. its a really good track though.. will follow :p

the actual beat and structure of the thing, is kinda boring and empty... ( dont take this offensively :) ), the chords are really good but I just dont feel a drive as much... you should try fill it up some more, with percussion and other elements.

check out this called "air night" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7EH6pl8GNM    it might give you a few ideas of how your song should feel like.. also try listening to some old mat zo songs.. :p

hope the link helped :)

you also might want mix the kick better with the song, like make it more thumpy...  it might just be weak in this case due to the overpowering bassline, but yeah :p

Hey,

There's some weird chord/melody combinations going on in this, I'm guessing that's not totally deliberate but I could be wrong

If i were you i would find a few other songs like yours and refer to them and see were the sounds sit on the frequency spectrum...

firstly i would work on  the kick ( mainly after the drop ).. like after the drop the kick kinda disappoints because you cant feel the low end at all ( which is what people kinda wait for in "edm" songs )

also you need to make a bass sound that has more lower fqs then the one you have now. ( maybe make one and layer it to the one you have now with an eq ? )

I think what your lacking is just getting you fq distribution right.  music like this is all about layering sounds and filling up the fq spectrum. its only when you do this when people start get a feel for the track i guess.... but again this is a work in progress so good job so far and keep it up :)   also im sorry if you didn't get something i wrote.. feel free to ask any questions :p  :) :) :)

this is really good to be honest... I think you can add more though, maybe adding a few more things to the drums as the song progresses, some more atmospheric elements too ( maybe some vocals with reverb, but you put the dry  signal down so all you hear is the essence of it in the background ) , and maybe add something like a piano that comes in when the plucks fade or a new synth..

I know this is a work in progress so you still have a lot to do but yeah amazing work so far :)

Also another thing you could do ( i would do this ), is find a few other progressive songs and use them as reference. Not only for seeing how their sounds sit in the frequancy spectrum and studying that kinda stuff, but also to study how they structure the song and keep it interesting.  Im sure youve heard it but have a listen to
