I was wondering if any of you ever mixed tunes for other people and what your experiences were. What difficulties did you run into? What should you pay attention to when mixing for other producers?

Real perceived loudness comes from good equalizing. Every instrument needs to be treated with the right care to bring its characteristics out well and make it shine. You'll notice that on pretty much every major track, nothing unnecessary is in there and nothing unnecessary has been done to the instruments. It's why there are industry standards, some things just work the best.

Basic tips would be not to emphasize on bass, lowmids and highs too much, keep the action in the mids where it can actually be perceived. A good mono / stereo contrast helps too.

Not hanging onto ideas you think are mediocre, learn to enjoy making mediocre ideas and scrapping them, but to do that YOU need to be honest with yourself and don't let lovey-dubby soundcloud comments get to your head. Ideally by not sharing EVERY idea you ever make

Definitely agree with this one. I've started a ton of songs last year and barely finished any or put them out, but that helped me develop tons. I focus on entirely different things in my writing process now than I did before.

Just get deeper and deeper into the music, eventually you'll truly discover what you like and what you'd like to do. There are certain sounds and certain vibes I like, I combine them in a way noone else does and I keep refining that idea song by song. Some people are unable to create whatever they want on purpose and just make what comes to them naturally. I collect vibes and sounds like a machine, my brain is like a sponge that soaks up knowledge in order to enable me to create more. Both ways work, but the ability to steer what you are doing definitely gives you an edge in terms of how original and innovative your work can be. If you'd like that ability, start studying music in its smallest parts and develop yourself with the music rather than just your art. Be openminded and don't shy away from challenges or insurmountable obstacles. Take everything apart into tiny atoms and concepts, then rearrange them into whatever you can imagine.

The fullness and punch you're talking about is the result of many small things working together, so when you make your songs, make sure you pick the right samples, EQ them to sound the fullest and best, and make sure everything has its space in the mix. Fullness comes with practice and patience.

It might help if you put a track in here so people can tell you what might cause the lack of punch in your mixdown as the explanation you gave is kind of vague, a lot of things could be the reason.
