WIPs / Re: 80s type prog pop/rock WIP

I would suggest possibly listening to Ocean Drive by Duke Dumont to get some ideas for this.  I think it would sound really good with a really warm, thick bassline under the vocals to let them stand out more, then come back with the stabs for chorus etc.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Repetition: How Much is Too Much?

I used to think that you 'should' add something new every 8 bars, but then i discovered a techno track in Richie Hawtin's latest compilation that is 16 minutes!! Only dark groove and acids, there's nothing much happening but i enjoyed every single bit of it. This taught me a great lesson that if you find a part interesting you can stretch it as long as you want, if you can listen to this part for 1 minute without waiting for something new then go for it! The track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59cxgdJW9UM

I generally agree, but I keep in mind that the things that can be added every 8 bars can be as simple as a little bit more cutoff on your synth, a couple of extra hi hats in your sequence....doesnt have to be a huge change.  I think often it is the really subtle changes that make a wicked tune, cause you're sitting there like, I dont even know whats going on but this is awesome!

I use the Markus Hakala 500 tuned kicks pack, and I literally never try to find a kick that is in key.  It is more important (for me at least) to find a kick that sounds right for your tune.  It's like going to the shops for low fat milk and all they have is expired low-fat, then using it anyway.  Just cause its got the right name or whatever is not the definitive factor.

I started with guitar at the tender age of grade 3 (so i think 7 or 8 yrs old).  Obviously learned bass guitar because of regular guitar, taught myself enough keyboard to write music over the last couple of years, and most recently got an electric drumkit (cause i make S*** beats and need to learn more).

Like Xilent said: Drummers are no musicians...i heard this every day hahahahaha...but always keep in mind:

A good band with a bad drummer will always sound whack, but a bad band with an awesome drummer can sound good!

In regard to this, I think drums are absolutely key to music. It's not an instrument in my mind, its like the feels projector, making sure everyone knows how much energy your tune has.

Thanks a lot ion, appreciate you taking the time.  I agree with what you are saying, bit of a restructure.  Cheers

WIPs / Seeking specific feedback for original track

Hey guys,

Just wanted to get some opinions on this tune I'm working on at the moment.

1.  Is the idea any good?
2.  Does it flow smoothly?
3.  Is it overcrowded with sounds / does it sound like too many ideas in one tune.

Cheers, the tune is called Street Fighter and here's the link: https://soundcloud.com/fictionaus/streetfighter/s-An66z

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / How many layers?
« on: January 14, 2016, 03:21:26 pm »
For starters it will have some dependence on the style you are making.  Like everything else in production, there is no right answer, but if you are consistently pushing 50 tracks, you probably need to do some cleaning up and organising your work better.  EG, you tend to get lots of one-off effects like swooshes etc on their own track, each with a reverb.  Instead, send them all to a bus with a single reverb, then flatten those layers together into a single track.  Saves a lot of confusion later.

You have to be organised from the very beginning otherwise you will find yourself in all sorts of trouble towards the "end" of a project
