Finished Tracks / soupandreas - Palette EP
« on: March 23, 2016, 08:55:04 pm »
yo guys, I just released an EP on Heroic recordings. it has some songs that are kinda my blend of jazz and future bass, and some songs that are more sound design-heavy bangers. I'd love it if you could check it out   ;D

first thing that i noticed is that the kick is pretty messy. go with a simpler synth kick, like a short 808. i think your structure is pretty good as it is. it flows well and sounds good chronologically, so i think you're doing pretty well on that front.

if you're not already, try bussing your chords and bass together and sidechaining the bus to the kick drum. for future bassy stuff you probably wanna mix around the kick and snare, so solo those two, set them at a fixed level and bring in your other tracks one by one in order of importance. that should get your levels in a pretty good order.

black lighter is dope, definitely my favorite. really cool groove you've got going.

you're using a lot of master compression, i'd lighten up on that a bit. some cool ideas definitely, i recommend you go check out the mixing forum and start learning about how to mix. it'll make your songs sound better with every new one you make

been working on this song for a bit. recently got some alone time with my friend's steinway, where i recorded the parts that sound like actual pianos.

https://soundcloud.com/soupandreas/odyssey-v2/s-rkp6x

on the todo list is to retrack some of the synth parts on a MIDI keyboard to make them sound natural, and to finish the arrangement ofc

let me know what you think :)

how many people write their songs on another instrument and translate it to a DAW? do you work with a MIDI controller and find a chord progression or melody by playing it, or do you write in MIDI notes until something clicks?

for me personally, it's a bit of both. interested to see what everyone else thinks.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Jazzy chords
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:43:19 am »
this is a deep, deep rabbit hole, haha. i'll give you some key areas to focus on, hopefully pointing you in the right direction

start by working with 7th chords. major 7th, minor 7th, and dominant 7th are your core three. learn how scale degrees work: for example, if you're in the key of C major, if you play a D chord, it should be a D minor chord because it's the second scale degree in that key. if you want you can read about the circle of fifths, and modes if you're feeling adventurous.

above all though: EXPERIMENT. watch videos and read pages about jazz chords and jazz theory, and try to write some progressions. if you're stuck, listen to a song that you like and see if you can figure out the chord progression just by listening to the song. that's really good for training your ear. finally, once you have something, share it: people with a lot more knowledge than you or me are on here and can help you with specific questions you might have.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Let's talk clipping
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:23:29 am »
it's a style more than anything. if clipping sounds good to your ears then use it, using it isn't going to save your mix from being bad, but it can turn your mix into a brickwalled mess if you go overboard.

here's a good example of heavily stylized usage of clipping, which walks the line between artistic license and bad practice: https://soundcloud.com/loscobeats/xxxx-1

even if you don't like it as an artistic choice, it's hard to completely avoid clipping. often times when mastering you can find that some controlled clipping sounds better than a crappy limiter, and if it's well done it won't be noticeable at all.
