Sound Design / Re: FM Synthesis

just a heads up as far as FM synthesis goes for dubstep, unless you have waveforms outside of the standard square, saw, sine, and triangle, you're not going to get anything worthwhile

ADD LAYERS!!!!!

Get your main bass patch going and then add small amounts of frequencies to the middle range. This makes it sound juicier or metallic depending on the main bass sound. adding a small amount of stereo width also helps.

Sound Design / Re: How to make the synth on Luigi Madonna - Le Ly Land

So that's just a straight up Saw wave with a light chorus effect. On top of that is a lowpass filter. He added a little extra dip to the filter envelope though which gives it the shorter "ow" sound before the "wa" sound. Then he added a little reverb to it.
It sounds to me like he was using hardware so keep in mind that if you're using a computer, nothing you do is going to sound exactly like it because the synth will always sound too clean.

so i got scared at first cause when i first used it it felt really cute and i was worried that i blew 180 bucks

but turns out that it's an absolute monster!

the whole thing lies in the waveforms. the fact that you can import your own waves makes this thing darn near infinite.

Now that I'm more experienced with the in's and out's i can safely say that Electra X2 can definitely replace Serum, Massive, and even (with some added effects plugins) Harmor as far as dubstep sound design goes. Electra X2 is definitely awesome for other EDM genres as well.

and especially with the arppegiator and mod matrix built in are super handy for creating cool patches too.

even in my most complex stuff I only end up with less than 30 layers. And the "muddiness" that you're experiencing might just be from the sheer number of sounds that you include in your track.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Repetition: How Much is Too Much?

I always go by groups of three because that's what's most numerically pleasing to the brain. Like if I hit three repetitions, then I change it up.

Bro if you have one good melody, then you're pretty much set. Try and build up to it with background chords and stuff that fits around the melody, before you actually start playing the melody.

Reaper's ReaPlugs collection is free to download and they are some of the highest grade free plugins that I've seen.
Really easy to use while still sounding proffessional.

ZynAddSubFX!!!!
It's better, and more flexible than Massive or Harmor.
It also uses three different types of sound synthesis.
It's INSANE!!
I haven't found anything else like it.
Also, it's absolutely FREE TO DOWNLOAD!!

I made this with ZynAddSubFX (it's better than massive...) and then loaded it with some distortion effects

U wanna use a simple waveform like saw or square. Put lot's of chorus and make sure that the frequencies are spread out pretty wide and then cut the very top of the high frequency. That'll give you a basic pad and then you can modify from there.
