both of these have such a rich sound, I use them all the time!

For synths, my secret weapons are the ones by Tweakbench, especially Pippo.

Not exactly free, but if you buy any issue of Computer Music Magazine you get access to their Plugin Collection, which is 1.5GB of Synths and FX plugs for pretty cheap!
