Any sort of compression should be only used when needed. Parallel Compression is good on Kick/Bass but it can also do the opposite.  Very important to remember that the majorty of techniques you use only apply them when you feel like there needed.  Cant stress that one enough !

Get your hands on something visual like FabFilter Pro Q or there was one out awhile ago called apEQ. Probably loads more now but they would be something I use.

If your new to mixing its good to get a visual idea of where frequencies are situated in the spectrum. These plugins will do just that  ;)

No not at all, today's standards of synth's are just as capable. What I do suggest is get to know your synth. Make it sing  ;)

You can get fantastic results on both!

The main thing to consider is room treatment.  Your monitors will really come to life in a treated room. You could have real high end monitors in an untreated room and be miles off the pace.

I have been using Rokits for the past 10 years, I love them.  Go into your local store and bring your favourite music, get some good quality tracks and test them out, find out what works for your ears  ;)
