Are M-Audio BX5 D2 any good?
« on: January 07, 2016, 02:27:45 pm »
So does anyone have some experience with the M-Audio BX5 D2 monitors?
Are they worth buying?

i use them & for the price, i'd say definitely.

maybe go for the bx8's if you have the extra £50, i know madeon uses them & they give you a bit more low end

I currently rock the previous generation BX8a and I very much enjoy them, they aren't hyped and can get very loud, with balanced sound.

Yep, I use a pair of BX5 D2s and for the price they can't be beat. I do want something bigger eventually since the bottom end of these is kinda non-existent but yea, solid monitor choice.

I'm using bx8 d2s and they're great - can't imagine the 5s would sound much different though obviously less of a low end and maybe some mids.

I have the BX5s and I love them to death. If you really want to I would recommend getting a sub with them as well but, they do a great job on their own as well.

When I first got them I had an issue with one only playing high frequencies and nothing below probably 600kHz. But I had just moved just a few weeks after I got them and that was most likely the problem. Be cautious just in case. Lucky enough I had a warranty with it outside of the stores initial 30 day policy. Other than that I don't think I'd recommend them enough.

They aren't bad for the price, but they aren't great (neither is much else in that price range.) The room problems (assuming your rooms isn't treated) will compound the monitors shortcomings. You might be better off in that price range looking at the best headphones you can afford.

With quality headphones you eliminate the potential room problems and without a doubt can make better tonal/EQ decisions. On the other hand, you miss out on the cross feed between LR in headphones, which can make accurate panning and certain level decisions more difficult.

Maybe it's worth getting a cheap pair of monitors like the BX5 and then saving up to get a decent headphones. Between a decent set of headphones and a ok set of monitors you should have most of your bases covered!

I've tested out the BX5 D2s and I thought they were pretty good for their size and price range, however they didn't impress me as much as the JBL LSR305s which are the same price range.

I've had mine for almost 2 years now. They're OK for the price, however I have run into a couple of issues.

It's probably a combination of both my (non-existent) room treatment and the monitors themselves, but I've found that there's an annoying frequency in low-mids that is so boomy, to the point where I don't really like using them for production anymore. I never noticed it at first, probably because my ears were less trained, so I'm still glad that I chose them for my first set because I knew that I wasn't really ready for something more expensive.

I much prefer using my Audio Technica ATH-M50x Headphones.

For entry level budget monitors, they're great, my only issue is the low-end. It's damn near impossible to get an accurate bass mix out of them.

I'm looking at Adam F5 or possibly F7 for my next pair, unless anybody has any better suggestions?

They're pretty good for the price, but when it comes to the low end they're inaccurate, it becomes boomy the more you turn it up. I check my final mixes on them though, and it helps.
