Mixing kick and bassline on same note
« on: April 05, 2017, 02:10:33 pm »
Im mixing a song with a bassline somewhat similar to some of the bass-heavy Chocolate Puma (Listen to Scrub the ground) songs where the kick and the bass hit on the fourth's at the same time. How can I keep the power of both without all the muddiness from both low frequencies at the same time?

you need to low cut around the 120hz mark the bass, as bass and kick are in same range

sidechain, dynamic saturation on bass and some surgical dynamic EQ for boosting the kicks fundamental and then cutting that 3-6db from from the bass. Also be aware of phasing problems. Get a plugin by Melda audio called auto allign its a life saver!

This should tighten up your low end considerably give you that solid low end lie chocolate puma.

One of his points is that with this technique, mixing busy songs its easier and faster.

proper EQ with respect to bias associated to the proper frequencies you want.

You will have loss of kick if you bias the sub bass. You will have loss of sub bass if you bias the kick.

with either bias, you can help the frequency content by side chaining.
