Underrated?
« on: April 26, 2017, 07:32:30 pm »
So I'm wondering, what are some sample packs, plugins, software, or gear you use that you feel deserves more credit, should be more popular, or just you think it deserves a shoutout?

Me personally, recently it's been two different plugins:
  • Plogue's AlterEgo. It's like a good vocaloid replacement but it works much better for those of us who like to play melodies live instead of placing notes.
  • And secondly, Polyverse Manipulator. A lot of producers have heard of it at this point, but no one is using it because (I guess) the price. While it is kind of expensive, I personally love this thing as it as opened me to create some unique effects, rhythms, and even some really cool melodies.

So what are yours?

I've been looking for an inexpensive Vocaloid replacement! Thanks for that!

I have always thought that the FabFilter's Twin 2 synth is amazing and very underrated. I find myself reaching for it just as much as i do Sylenth1 or Massive. The GUI takes some getting used to if you're not familiar with their other products, but I think its well worth the investment.

The Tweakbench Nintendo plugins are awesome for producers just starting out. I used it a lot before I got Super Audio Cart. Not a lot of depth but very simple and it doesn't take that long to get sounds you want. Triforce has your square, saw, and triangle waves and offers a bit of manipulation; Peach has random sounds from various NES games, which is fun to play around with; and Toad is a drumkit. If you're into 8-bit music or like having a retro sound, those plugins are the way to go!

You can download the bundle for $5 if you want to support the dev that made the vsts, or you can download each individually for free.

Did I mention that it's free?

Kilohearts multipass is super underrated imo. i don't know that many people who use it, but it has so many different applications. plus it comes with a bunch of plugins you can use individually.

as far as samples go, Origin Sound has been coming out with heat lately. the drums & fx are particularly awesome, but all of the loops are great and they have genre packs that go beyond just the popular sounds at the moment.

I can definitely second anything from KiloHearts or Polyverse; absolutely some of my favorite plugins to work with come from these developers (fun fact - Polyvese is owned by Infected Mushroom, hence why they promote all their stuff!).

While not exactly underrated, VPROM is a secret weapon for a number of producers, including Mat Zo and Above & Beyond - it's a very authentic recreation of the Linndrum drum machine, which is perfect for house, trance, pop, etc.
