Reverb on Percussion

Been listening to this track for a while and i love the percussion on it. I'm having a hard time getting the reverb right for this.  Every time i apply reverb it never sounds this clean. any ideas?

Instead of reverb, experiment with a delay plugin and see what that sounds like at different settings.

applying reverb as a send effect instead of an insert effect allows you more control over that reverb, by allowing you to eq/compress/sidechain the reverb however you like

in conjunction with applying a reverb as a send (auxiliary or bussing) you can send other instruments or channels to this same reverb unit bus, and obtain a cohesive sound.

apply that to any other effect, and you get some glue.

Funny thing reading this, as just today I was experimenting with reverb on different percussion and claps to see what sounded best in my mix. I found that I the reverb on a clap sounded better than the percussion hit that I was placing the reverb on because the percussion sound hit so often that it began muddying my mix with too much reverb and interfering with the clap and hi-hats.

In some songs I have used reverb on perc hits to bring it more to life, or to send it front/back as desired.

Although I don't have a definite answer for you, my advice is to make sure your reverb does not muddy up your mix. Work on the low and high filters by closing the gap between them and size controls. For example you probably do not want your reverb triggering the low-mids and some high-mids of the percussion < 300hz (low-mids), so adjust the filter cuts

I believe the reverb sounds like a delay because its decay time is set to exactly 1 beat. To calculate this, divide 60 by your track's bpm. This is a common technique used to get very 'clean' reverbs. You can then calculate Large Room, Hall, and Mega Hall reverb times by using multiples of the previous calculation.

I don't know … I apply Reverb to percussion all day and it sounds even cleaner .. I just play around with room sizes, and the feedback. Always on "Hall" by the way, but I do use plates if I want a short response.

What reverb are you using ?
