Saturation and Distortion plugins
« on: June 17, 2016, 06:27:13 pm »
Hey, guys! I just crossed the one year mark as a producer and am starting to feel pretty comfortable with the whole process. That being said, I'm dying to find some new effects plugins to really bring my sounds to life. So, if you have any favorite saturation or distortion plugins feel free to post them below. I'd really appreciate it and thanks in advance! <3

Try Softube Saturation Knob. It's a great freebie.

softube saturation is good.

also look into tube distortion as well.

i'd also research why we use distortion in music. and what constitutes musical distortion.
Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

No discussion of Saturation or Distortion can be complete without the best coloration plugin ever:

The Sausage Fattener. I've used this on everything at least once. I've even used it on my master bus when i just wanted my stuff to sound nice and loud while i'm working instead of just turning up my speakers. I would say this and OTT are the two biggest EDM producer secret weapons - they add a surprising amount of the "professional dance music" sound to your production. Obviously you can't just put them on a shitty lead synth and make it good, but those two effects are workhorses.

Another cheap one that I just picked up is the Fielding DSP Reviver. It specifically creates second and third order harmonics, and can add either add that "warm" distortion that's commonly associated with tube distortion, or add to the clarity and punch that is common in overdrive amps and tape.

People may hate on Sausage Fattener, but I absolutely love it so that's my recommendation.

Also try Camel Crusher.

FabFilter also makes good sat/dist plugins, as is with almost anything they make. Their EQ is my favorite by far.

I think it's a great plugin but I miss the possibility to match the pre and post volume. Sausage Fattener is used to make things loud but you can't compare what the plugin does at the same volume.

Nevertheless, a great plugin.

Fabfilter's Saturn is fantastic for the creativity (everything can be coupled to an envelope follower or lfo) but it probably is over the top for simple saturation duties.
