Help with something please
« on: April 16, 2016, 07:02:14 pm »
Hey, I dont know whether I should post this here  or in other topic but I am kind of frustrated with something.Im working on a track and when the song starts it sounds alright, the only thing is that sometimes in some beats it clips. I have made some testing in my track and found out that the part that clips are the layers of the lead sound. What should i do/ change so it doesnt clip?

Also I am confused with something: I use fl studio and in the mixing part where i got the kick lead, etc all of them are below the 0 thing so it doesnt clip but the one with the general sound is over the 0. Why does it go over if the others arent?
Thanks in advance

(pd sorry if my english is bad written)

You might have too much going on in your low-mids, or your lead could be running too hot through a compresser or something!

First of all, know that you shouldn't layer sounds unless you have a specific role for each layer. Think it through and see if you can identify each synths role in creating the lead sound.
Second, check the volumes of your synths within the individual synth. If its high a volume, it won't matter at what level the Insert volume is currently at.

I cannot remember who said it, but the saying goes that 80% of mixing is adjusting volumes. Make sure you are aware as you produce of the elements that need to stand out the most, and then continue on by adjusting the volumes based off that element.

Feel free to message me if you have any more questions.

Ok I followed both of you and really worked! Specially the volume one, also I have got a question, should I put a soft clipper or a limiter in the general volume so it always stays below 0 or should I leave it alone without putting anything?

I think it's better to try and mix without anything on your master. If you can properly balance your mix without causing it to go over 0db, you'll be way better off when you start your mastering process. :)

What I do, is lower the mixer volumes of each insert in order for my track to have "headroom". That way, I can add any element I want without worry of clipping. So no, I wouldn't add a limiter.

If I were you, I would put all the sliders down to -INF db (all the way down), and then raise your kick drum to -6db. Them, turn the volume up on your computer so you can hear the kick properly. Next, in order of importance, raise the slider volumes so they work well with the kick. After you have done this, you will have sufficient headroom for your final mix down.

Good luck!

Thanks for your tips, it doesnt clip anymore :D !But only if I put a synth with more high frequencies than lows it starts to clip sometimes, do you think there is a lot of high frequencies fighting there? D:

Go back over ALL of your tracks...and turn things down some.

This sort of thing is handy if you're sending your individual tracks through groups. So that all you have to do is turn down the group volume.

once you get things not clipping any more, you can start to turn things up bit by bit.
