Mat Zo "Soul Food" Bitchrushed Chords
« on: April 06, 2016, 06:51:17 am »
So I bought Mat Zo's new album and it's pretty freaking phenomenal, and I'm trying to deconstruct one of my favourite tunes, Soul Food . Specifically, the bitcrushed chords that I love so very much.

I have a suspicion that it was done in Sylenth with the decimate distortion type and an envelope, but while I could kind of get the sound type I couldn't get anywhere near the way that it sounds in the track. I tried using other bitcrushing methods but had a similar problem.

Does anyone more familiar with Sylenth have any insight, or any ideas how I could go about getting closer to the right method?

I want to say that he's using some find of chords with a phaser, but it sounds so unique. Definitely a french house style kind of lead.

It's a pretty simple sound that I've made a few times before - however I use Serum. It's 8 or 9 detuned saw waves with a lowpass filter and bitcrushing mixed to abou 30-40 percent wet.

I didn't use a synth, I took The Brothers Johnson sample and filtered then bitcrushed that

I have been playing around with a bitcrushed guitar part the last few days and can't get it nearly as clean as the Soul Food chords.  Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get a bitcrushed sound to be so rich and full?

Lowpass filter + Bitcrusher Downsampling?

Here is my 20 minute attempt:

For some reason it sounds a bit out of key but I didn't bother changing the pitch of the original sample.  It was fun to remake it though   :D

Doesn't sound quite like the original but it still sounds awesome.
