Do you have a partner in crime?
« on: February 10, 2016, 08:45:57 am »
Ok, one thing I really battle with every single track is losing my judgement over whether the track is any good by over-listening to it.

It drove me crazy for few years. I've figured out that fresh set of ears might help, but sending the track to family or friends was no help, because their tastes were usually too different. That ment the usual response was: "Wow, cool. I wouldn't be able to do that." ...which is a nice compliment, but totally useless as an advice.

Like year ago though, I bumped on Facebook into really likeminded local guy with quite similar taste. ...also producing. We had quite a few really cool conversations about music. I found out this was the key as I could validate my ideas through his ears. ...and vice versa. We can exchange constructive criticism. I have a mean to find out if the stuff I'm working on isn't happening to be a total sh*t. But recently it feels to me like I might start to bother him a bit by those WIPs. It could be kinda tideous...

...so it got me thinking. Do you have friends that you can quickly bounce ideas of? If so, how do you keep them ... eh ... sane? :D

Good friend of mine who lives local, pops round for psy-trance sessions.
Thing is, he's more listener / clubber than he is producer, so its usually him just telling me what to lol.
He knows a bit about production, but he still makes mistakes like he makes a really cool trippy vocal fx sound, and then decides he wants it playing every second bar, so then I have explain why that particular sound is just too upfront and repetitive sounding, and lets just have it at the start of the 8s.

And then the opposite happens, I spend 30 mins perfecting that lead sound he liked, and then an hour later, he says take it out, we can do better.
Always interesting when a mate is ruthless like that, I kinda puts me in my place a bit.
Saying that, I always enjoy those sessions, more than I do my own, cause it doesn't feel like a chore

I have a round table so to speak. The problem is we're all kind of even in terms of production equipment and set up, we can't really bust each other's balls like we use to.

But I think we went through each other's production technical skill set so much so that, now we're more focused on actually writing good music.

It's amorphous and ambiguous concepts that we're tackling now, but it's cool because we get to explore each other's identities and creative processes.

The round table is rather small and only two, but that's because most of the people that i've had experience with, just don't seem to be as wanting of a conversation and would rather "do their own thing". But they got other things going on, i am just glad i have these two dudes as my main stay.
Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

Damn, this forum really does need a collab section. :)

Indeed! I'm also searching some kind of feedback/idea talk buddies as none of my friends make music nor do they know that I do, so it would be fun to hear some other peoples thoughts every now and then. PM me, maybe we could set up a group discussion or something?
