The "How do I make this sound?" thread
« on: January 06, 2016, 07:06:41 am »
This thread is just to keep things from getting too cluttered when people want to ask question about specific sounds.

e.g. "how do I make the scary monsters and nice sprites bass pls help"

KOAN Sound use reason, but pretty much no one else does (HeRobust does too) so I don't know exactly how. But standard reese techniques involve:

1. Cool waveform (usually detuned saw)
2. lots of notch filter movement, bandpass movement, volume movement.
3. EQ shaping
4. chorus, short reverb
5. parallel distortion, parallel saturation, multiband distortion, multiband saturation
6. compression
7. perhaps repeat #2

Actually, I'm pretty sure they moved to Ableton fairly recently!

I think so as well, though I would think they also rewire Reason to use the Maelström synth. It's their favorite synth for bass sounds iirc

Could you mention a few more details like what DAW you use, which VSTI's you use? That sound pretty much could be programmed by many VST'i's.I advice you to use Image Processing of Harmor with any Wave with frequency more than 20 hrtz.

Bit of a simple one but does anybody know how to create something like the lead sound in Madeon's Finale? I'm busy trying to put something together and, as usual, I've got sounds in my head that I can't put down in practice yet!

There's probably a patch/preset in existence somewhere but I'd rather take a step back from all that and try slapping something together myself.

I'm looking for a way to make this bass pluck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMPRRfPI-Z4 (starts around 1:30).
I've tried so much, but i still don't get anywhere near this sound... It's probably something simple, but i just can't find it.

Anyone know how to make a Porter Robinson-esque Arp?

Ex:

Drop is at the very beginning of the video, the shiny keys in the background that really add a lot, anyone know?

Anyone know how to make the, call it "chord drop" in this edit by Porter Robinson? https://youtu.be/Vo9Bvsb5Pf8?t=55

i do not want to copy his sound, i just want to understand how it's build up. Because it's pretty f'ing cool! (if it's layered, saw+sine, lfo etc.)
Preferably in Sylenth1, but Massive or Harmor would also do just about fine.

Thanks:)

This crazy sound by Madeon is a mystery to me.
Has anyone got an idea?

From what i can hear i think it's 3 (or more) layered sounds playing different notes. I can't tell you much about the sound design since i'm not really good at it, but what i can say is that they are all arpeggiated, which you probably already knew  ;D

Yeah... kinda knew it must've been some badass LFO or Arpeggiator going on... thought more about the sound design, but thank you for the answer anyway! :D

Sounds like it's just a brass synth with some distortion and maybe some more detuning, also I think it's layered with a guitar.

I made this in like a minute with sylenth so please don't hardcore judge me or my incorrect notes. http://www44.zippyshare.com/v/nm92IKcL/file.html
