How do you come up with song names?
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:18:11 pm »
I have a song that I want to release, but I just cannot for the life of me come up with a name for this song.  It doesn't really have any dominating vocals (only little chops), so I can't name the song after one of the lyrics.

I would really like to hear how all of you come up with your song names.

I name mine based on where I got the inspiration from, usually pictures

"The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel."

Song names often hint to the listener what the experience or journey will be like. It's time to step away from your song for a bit, and come back to it with fresh ears. That will help you be aware of the story, emotions, and imagery it evokes. :)

95% of the time: When I finish a song, I listen to it with fresh ears and picture whatever it reminds me of.
3% of the time: I name it after a sample or whatever inspired the song.
1% of the time: Urban Dictionary

As making pretty much just instrumental stuff, I try to consider the name of the track as the only bit of lyrics it actually has ... so I probably over-complicate this, but I try to come up with word or few of them that somehow support the "message" the song has.
"Earth is round right? Look at it from right angle and you'll be always on top of the world."
...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.

I sometimes open up a book to a random page and then read through until I find a word that would fit the song.

Most of the time I already have an idea for a name when I start making something, but then a lot of my ideas are of the type 'I want to make something like X but different in ways Y and Z'.

If you want to be really edgy you can name it after an obscure reference to a character/place/event in a book or film?

I think of my audience, there are two things people will see before they click to listen on your track. 1 the title. 2 the artwork. What describes the track? how do you want to "prime" your audience for what to expect before listening to your track? its like setting the context before telling the story.

I usually try to describe the feeling I had while producing, and most of the time it forms while doing this in my head too... And sometimes I'm like "Yeah that'll do" before overthinking the name, after I already overthought the song itself 10 times.

Like most others, I'll listen to my track and see how it makes me feel, what it makes me think about and the emotion that rides along with the song. I also keep a notebook of terminology that I find interesting that I want to save for later, when the song matches something in the list I've made. I don't think there's a right way to come up with a title, but the title can/should be used as a mental guidance through the thoughts of the artist and what they intend to portray in their music.
I'm just that guy that loves sound. Message me if you also love sound.

I once did a song called "Lentos - Forget about us" on Coldharbour Rec.

Lentos is the celtic name of my hometown "Linz" in Austria. For some reason, I never got an official dj gig in my hometown until 2010 or 11.
Before that, I played some big venues globally (Amnesia Ibiza, Nikki Beach Miami, Moscow,..) but NEVER got a (paid) gig in my hometown (parties at friends houses don't count)

So we came up with "Lentos - forgot about us" which later was officially changed into "forget about us" - still same message ;)
