Different sub forums for DAWs?
« on: January 11, 2016, 11:22:53 am »
I think it would be cool to have sub forums for different DAWs to enable people to learn software specific techniques, but I wouldn't want this to divide the forum into different groups, so idk? What does everyone else think?

Not a bad idea..

Cubase 8.5 pro is huge, filled with tons of stuff (as are many other daws).

I'm sure I know not even half of it.. :-)

I probably would be against this idea. There's a ton of DAWs so you would have quite a few subforums. So this idea would probably just make things more confusing if anything.

How about instead we just have stickied megathreads that get refreshed every so often so we don't need to start sectioning everyone off into subforums that they don't feel like they ever need to leave.

That's one of my big concerns with giant multi-layered forums: People start exclusively posting in their special clubs, and it begins to fracture the community. I think we should try to stick to keeping people together in one place, at least while this forum is in its infancy.

The last time I saw a forum have subs for DAWs, it was devolved into FL and Other. Granted, DAWs other than FL have gotten popular over the years, so this could work. However, I still foresee certain user bases falling to the wayside because they will be the minority.

I think this forum is doing it right. It's always a bad idea to add sub-forums just because they sound like good ideas. The time to add a sub-forum is when the main forum is so full you need to split it up -- i.e. "There are tons of Ableton-specific posts in the production forum so we need a sub-forum for those."

I do agree, I just think some people might not be posting what they want because they're unsure where to post DAW specific questions

I agree that too many sub-forums is a bad thing. Maybe a 'technical' forum for troubleshooting and platform/product-specific advice would work as a compromise. It might end up being the kind of thing that people only go to when they want help though.

I feel like people should already know their DAW before coming here...

Yeah, definitely too many subforums.  But, I could see a single DAWs subforum for discussing all things specific to DAWs.  You could just have a rule/suggestion that all new posts begin with the name of the DAW, e.g., "Logic: how do I yada yada yada?".  Just a thought.  Then again, that subforum would probably just become an endless string of "which DAW is teh best?" threads, so maybe not.  :-\

I think a DAW subform would be a good idea at some point. Right now we have "Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear", and when that one becomes super busy, I can see splitting it into DAWS, Plugins and Samples, and Hardware forums or something like that.
