Just watched this today.  Found it to be REALLY informative.  Spencer seems like a genuine guy with a lot of production experience he's willing to share.  He shares tips on his workflow, his plugins, mixing/mastering, etc.

I'm a fan.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Producing Under the Influence
« on: April 19, 2016, 02:38:07 am »
This idea came from another thread about the "conscious mind."

I'm curious to hear of everyone's experience of producing while drunk, high, etc. I've never done either, but I've always been curious.  It seems like a few popular artists do, but I'm not sure if that's just the image they portray, rather than reality.

What do you think of it and what results have you got from any kind of mind-alternating substance? (weed, alcohol, acid, etc.)

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / LFOTool & VolumeShaper - Unique Uses
« on: April 12, 2016, 02:15:22 pm »
So I've had xfer's LFOTool for quite a while now, and recently purchased cableguys' volume shaper (because I liked the interface so much).

I've typically used them for sidechaining sound elements to the kick, but I know that LFOTool especially has a lot of different options (trancegate, stutter fx, etc.) that I've not utilized.

Other than typical sidechain ducking and transient shaping (e.g. shorten the bass tail of a long kick), how have you used these plugins?  And do you have a preference between the two?

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Stop Searching For Your Passion
« on: April 06, 2016, 12:49:57 pm »
Just watched this short Ted talk and it was really appropriate for me.

A lot of times, I feel bound to find/capture that "one singular" passion, even though that sort of thing is a lie, and in most cases, very unhealthy.  Western culture is especially guilty of this, I think. We reward and idolize people with these singular pursuits (at the expense of everything else in their lives).  Who cares if the person is a terrible human being if the movie/music/art they make is wonderful? Who cares if they still live in their parents' basement if they know how to tweak Serum just right and spend 18 hours a day doing just that?  Who cares if the person is unhappy and unfulfilled and depressed...the music they're making sounds great!

I tend to see other people's lives, whether it's celebrities or even friends of mine in town, as better than they actually are. It's as if I see their lives through rose-colored glasses.  I idealize their lives, their marriages, their careers..  but the reality is we're all struggling. We're all imperfect. There is no perfect marriage, perfect life, or perfect passion.  There are warts and periods of uninspiration and our creative lives (and lives as a whole) are characterized by the struggle..the perseverance.

I suppose there's beauty in this.  Trials build character and serve as the makeup for our composition as human beings. It's precisely our imperfections that make us human.  So let's do ourselves a favor: Be nice to ourselves and enjoy the ride.

Passion is not a job a sport or a hobby. It is the full force of your attention and energy that you give to what is right in front of you.

Sound Design / Seven Lions' Growls/Stutters
« on: March 31, 2016, 06:56:39 pm »
Alright, so I just love Seven Lions and have for quite a while.  I love his trance, dubstep, metal influences meshing together.  Specifically though, I'd love to know how he (and other artists) do their "growls" and stutter effects.  I've searched on youtube and found a few things, but nothing that yields the results I'm looking for.  I have both Zebra2 and Serum, and I believe a lot of this can be done by morphing wavetables, but beyond that, I'm not really sure.

So: how do you make dem nasty growls AND that wonderful stutter-effect (some people call it a "Transformers" sound)?

Thanks for any advice.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / THE FEELS
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:14:59 pm »
I was listening to Porter Robinson's Language this morning and thinking about some of the songs that give me "the feels".  Songs that either give me chills or cause some deep emotion to rise up in my soul.  A lot of songs are good. A lot of songs are fun.  But there are very few songs that give me the feelz.

I thought it might be neat to see what few songs give y'all the feels.  Feel free to describe the emotion you feel, or just post and see what others think.

Here are a couple of mine:

When the chords hit, I feel like I'm bursting with my arms open with the brightest light shining on me and through me. I'm smiling with a smile that reaches beyond my face and everything is beautiful.

The title of this song matches my feeling. Floating among the clouds, an intense peace and happiness and a resolve deep in my soul.

R&A Graveyard / Tiny Bug?

When there's new posts in a subforum, the "ring" is highlighted.

If I click on the board title itself and scroll through the "new" posts, then go back to the home page, the "ring" is turned off (as I have looked at all the new posts).

However, when I click on the ring itself, it only shows the new posts, which I like.  But for some reason, after I glance through these, and go back to the homepage, the ring is still highlighted.

I like clicking the ring to see only the new posts, but it doesn't "register" that I've seen them on the homepage.  If it could do both, that'd be great.  Otherwise, I have to go to the full sub-forum and look for the small "new" posts.

Very small issue - but it may be an easy fix.

Thanks for the consideration!

R&A Graveyard / Tiny Suggestion (Hyperlink)

Was at the bottom of a thread today.  Tried to navigate back to the homepage by clicking the large "The Producer's Forum" on the bottom lefthand side (in the same color bar as the twitter logo).  It's not linked.

I realize just a bit up from the bottom of the page is a "breadcrumbs" menu that includes a link to the homepage, but I thought if the Producer's Forum (copyright 2016) was linked, it would make it even easier.

If this is a quick fix, sweet. If not, not a big deal.

Ableton user here.

I always hear about the superiority of FL Studio's piano roll.  For those out there who have used it, and have some experience with Ableton's piano roll, fill me in - what are the differences? What are the major advantages to FL's piano roll.

I'm not trying to start a "which is better" thread here; I'm genuinely interested in the workflow improvements that I've heard FL Studio's piano roll has.

R&A Graveyard / Ability to Change Time Zones

If this has been requested already, I apologize.   But I'd love the ability to change the time zone so that the post times reflect where I'm at..
