That pitch envelope thing isn't what I was after but it's good to know, thanks.

I figured out you can do what I'm trying to do using Flex Time set to Speed mode. As long as you have enough flex markers set so that it's subtle, all you need to do is set a ramp on the master tempo track and Logic does the rest for you..

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yeah I remember the pitch envelope from my FL days.. that's actually the closest thing I know of, but it's not nearly precise enough.

Basically I sequence DJ mixes in Logic Pro because I don't have the hardware for live DJing and I like the results better anyway. Most aspects of DJing you can simulate easily enough but I'm stumped as to what I can use to do gradual, controlled pitch ramps.

Oddly specific request for you there.. I want to be able to apply pitch envelopes based on tempo to samples maybe 20-40 seconds long.

I'm actually not looking for something that changes pitch independent of tempo. I want to simulate the effect of a turntable pitch slider, but I need something that's pretty precise.

Cheers y'alls.

Depending on what you're after, you could make your own: http://iterograph.laboiteatortue.com/#/

I'd say the more you lack it, the more important a part it will play in (limiting) your development.

I like to think of things like this in terms of bottlenecks. If you had a healthy sense of self-efficacy, you'd never find it to be an issue, and instead it might be some other personal quality or just a lack of resources (like time or cash) that does the most to get in the way of your improving. At some later stage sure, it might be an issue, but right now it wouldn't be the thing that's holding you back. On the other hand, if your confidence in your ability to do something is low enough, it'll be a serious impediment.

A lack of belief in yourself tends to manifest in ways that are self-fulfilling. It saps your energy and makes it hard as hell to keep coming back and hacking away at something, and in the end you give up and ultimately prove yourself right that you weren't up to the challenge in the first place. If that's the kind of thing you come up against regularly, then sure, maybe your sense of self-efficacy is at the root of that.

You might find this book to be an interesting read. One of the things it covers is a sense of personal efficacy. It's very clearly written and I found it contributed a lot to my understanding of myself.

Fiddling around the edges instead of doing the meaty stuff that really needs to be done

It has not harmed me directly, but I do have a close friend who lost his studio of 10 years because all of a sudden went the economy really hit in 2008 he couldn't keep up with the kids with the laptops that charged really low prices and cut everyones throats. I know at least three other people very close to me who went through the same thing. :'( And since you don't make a living off of music, you would never understand what it's like for a guy like my friend who studied audio engineering, went through years of experience as an intern then as an employee at a big studio, then opened his own studio and made a nice living, all for it to be taken away because the kid with the laptop could do it for much less. I know what it's like too, because like my friend, music is my livelihood.

Welp. That is pretty wack, and anything I say now is gonna make it seem like I don't have sympathy for your friends' situation, which isn't the case, so ¯\_()_/¯

The reason why I'm ranting is because it's such a weird time for music/musicians/producers/engineers. No other profession in the world go through what we go through. Take a doctor, for example. You can't put on a white lab coat and stethoscope and walk into a hospital and say, 'Hey everybody! I'm a doctor' and off you go into the surgery room. But this is what is happening in the music industry. Anybody with a computer can download their DAW of choice without having any musical knowledge whatsoever and 'make a track'. How is this fair? Well, it's not, and I'm kind of over it.
Ok. So you're ranting because this situation is 'unfair'. How is it harming you? Can you name a specific person who is cheating the system?

^ Pretty much ditto the above. If this came up on my stream in Beatport I'd bag it.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Your Favourite Reference Tracks

Progressive References:  Many guys here but id probably stick to Prydz or Deadmau5 stuff because they are punchy yet dynamic.
Deeper Progressive stuff: Guy J's music is a fine example of Deeper progressive music to reference.
Techno / techy stuff: Usually stuff by Mark knight, Dosem or maybe Hot since 82 tracks. They are engineered in a way to sound really big in clubs. Crisp drums and bass.

Word. Nice to see a mention of Dosem too, his production is tight.

Great thread idea!

It needs a fuzzy bassline since the lead/melody is pretty weak by it self. Try using the melody notes as a bassline with a powerful funky buzzy kind of synth. Some additional percussion would do it some justice too.

Um.. haha  ;D

That's not my tune. It's a basic remake of one I heard a few years back that I thought you might recognise. But I'm guessing not..

Sound Design / Re: Saturation or distorted signals
« on: February 22, 2016, 08:31:44 pm »

I was wondering, after getting a satisfying mix, if by adding a controlled distortion/saturation unit on the buss(return), does that help generate a louder signal in terms of audible frequency?

I'd say so, yeah. The benefits of saturation in giving something presence in the mix are the greater frequency range through harmonics, and the effect saturation has of compressing the signal. Obviously compression results in a higher average volume, without giving you the problem of peaks and clipping that just ramping up the faders might.

This is kind of a hunch but I think in a way what gives a 'bassline' presence is the frequencies higher up the spectrum than what you might truly consider to be bass.

Yeah the lfo is "out of time" you are right about that, gonna tweak that. Thanks for pointing that out! The snare thingy and the buildup in general will need some more work too, gonna get back to it when I get back to the "studio" lmao. Thanks for the feedback seriously it helps me out a fuckton!

You're welcome mate. Maybe you can help me out in return, I've been trying to ID this tune that sounds very Wolfgang Gartner/Deadmau5-y but I don't think it's either of them.. I've done a little remake of it, any ideas?
