Sound Design / Re: Future Garage Sub bass
« on: September 22, 2017, 05:26:31 pm »
As Bizo mentioned, this sound can be made using a detuned saw with some chorus, dimension expander and a lowpass filter.  I personally have used it as more of a mid bass with portamento (glide) and then layered a sine wave sub underneath with slight pitch shifting, mimicking the saw bass.  This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I think it does make a pretty nice bass sound and a little bit more full sounding overall.  Hope this helps.

Hello folks, I released this song a couple of days ago, and so far some people seem to enjoy it, but I was curious as to your thoughts (producers).  Any and all criticism / praise is welcomed.  Thanks for checking it out :)

Thank you Etiks.  I am probably a bit to critical of my own music, but I think being critical is healthy. I just need not overdo it.

Hey guys,

Thanks to both of you for your thoughts on my question.  Both of you made some really good points and some of them are the same advice.  I need to self assess and work on some things for sure. In my opinion, song content should out weigh the mixing and sound design.  If the song content is really great, but the mixing isnt so hot, I still find it enjoyable however, the other way around does not work IMO.  So, that is where I think I will focus first.  To me, it doesnt matter if you have bee producing for 7 months or 6-7+ years, both of your thoughts were valuable, and so it is very much appreciated.  Thanks :)

Hey Everyone, I thought this would be the best place to ask this, so here we go.

I have been producing for a solid 2 years, and have released about 37 tracks over that time (500ish hours of studio time).  Obviously when I first started I struggled a lot but over time I was able to get a little bit more comfortable and my mixes seemed to get better. I would say within my first year I grew a ton as a producer however, this last year has not been near as good (In my eyes).  I pretty much only make chill music, to include Chillstep and Melodub sometimes, as that is what i enjoy producing the most.  I run in the circles of Sappheiros, Cash, Day 7, Reclaimed and a few others.  All of these other producers I mentioned are exceedingly better than I am and though they support my music, I feel as if they do it just to be nice...  Many of these guys have collabed or have worked on collabs among each other, however, any time that I have asked about doing a collab, they say they are busy and that "now is not a good time".  That bothers me a lot because I feel that no matter what I do, my music will never be comparative to theirs.  IMO, my music is very robotic, synthy, and that my melodies are very corny.  I have tried many avenues to counter this however, it never changes in the end.  At the time of making my tracks they sound good all the way through my project, but then about 2 weeks later, I listen back again and think "damn this sounds pretty bad".

I guess what I am asking is, does anyone else have similar issues or am I just comparing myself to much-to much better producers?  Is being 2 years in and still struggling this bad normal?  Any thoughts or advice you can provide is greatly appreciated.  (Sorry for the long read)

Cheers!

Thanks for the nice comments and feedback guys.  Haha, you are right, the snare was really hard to get right in this track for some reason.  I was aware that it was a little overpowering and made numerous attempts to get it to sit right however, this was the best I could get it.  In Kingdom, I worked much harder on ensuring it fit better, so thanks for noticing that and listening man.  Thats what it's all about though, learning and progressing.  Cheers.

Hi everyone, I am back again with my newest track.  I hope you enjoy, but as always feedback is highly welcomed!  Thanks for listening.

For me, I struggle at all of it but, I would say the most important improvement I would like to make is composition.  In my opinion, if the song is lacking in mixing and mastering, but the content moves a person...that is what is really important.

Hey bloodbit, thanks for stopping in and giving it a listen along with the feedback!  I would agree, the mix could be done better as I am still learning and working to improve.  In the master I am just using Maximus and the Limiter.  I intended for this song to be a little more "8track ish" sounding because of the Alan Watts lecture, which is from quite a while ago.  In the voice recording there was quite a bit of white noise or static so I wanted the track to feel sorta "lo-fi".  I have other songs that have much better sound quality as far as clarity and loudness.  :)

Thanks for such nice words RoboDrop!  To achieve the plucky "tock" sound you are referencing, it was quite simple actually!  It is just a piano (any piano plugin) that has been filtered with a small amount of reverb, and pretty heavily delayed and then EQ'd.  This allows for the bouncing around effect of the notes.  I hope this is helpful, as I feel this explanation gives a good starting point for you to improvise and make your own unique pluck sound.

I am glad that you enjoyed the intro, as a lot of my real life friends also said that the intro speech/vibe was really moving for them.  Thank you for the feedback, and I will certainly take it into consideration for any future songs I do that could be similar (speeches).

Thanks again for the kind words, for listening to my music, and for your thoughts :)
