Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: Producing Dubstep/Glitchhop Drops
« on: March 16, 2016, 07:49:06 pm »
I'm gonna jump in here. I do melodic dubstep with a lot of self made glitches.

An idea of what I do: https://soundcloud.com/xanphia/decode

I essentially write the main melody and then render everything to audio. From there I reverse, chop, modulate the audio. I sometimes use plugs in like glitch or stutter edit, depending on my mood.
I think the biggest thing is about finding swing in all your edits. You need it to fit a rhythm. Melody of course important, but easy to get away with using simple melodic structures if your sounds contain lots of harmonics.

I know I'm not the greatest, but hope this helps!

I like the idea.
There's another app, Blend, that is simpler to use imo.
But I feel the nav menu is a bit tough to navigate.

cool tune! reminds me a lot of Faux tales. somehting you may want to consider, the intro is pretty long especially today when people have smaller attention spans and skip through songs.

really great melodies and snare. keep it up!

Going off of this...snare is really good, I actually don't like the snare that Seven Lions usually uses for these types of songs lol. I also agree that the intro is a bit too long given that it's half of the whole song. It would be okay if it was a longer song, but as it stands right now it's a bit long. Also, the arpeggio at 1:26 is cool, but something personally bugs me about the sound. Maybe it's too loud? idk.

Good work, though! Definitely on the way to achieving the infamous Seven Lions sound!

I've heard that before. It's such a weird criticism. I think it's fine.

It's definitely missing some fullness. That synth that comes in at 1:08 just sounds out of place to me. Doesn't mix well with the other sounds. Just sounds so cheesy.
But your wobble sounds are solid. The kick could probably use some fattening or maybe some light sidechaining.

Agreed about the off beat sidechaining. Cool track though. Good spacing and mixing of genres.

I'm cool with your transitions. You could maybe have the bass drop be more prominent though, maybe that's why the transition at 1:00 seems abrupt.

Welcome to the world of melodic dubstep. Nice to meet you. I do this style as well. Hit me up if you're interested in getting more granular:
https://soundcloud.com/xanphia (re-branding so just two remixes right now.)

Some interesting sounds in there. One thing I noticed: you let your supersaws decay. This can create some mudiness. When you hit the 'breaks' you may want to cut the reverb tails. Maybe not, your call.

I think your snaps are hitting the limiter too hard. The supersaws sound really squashed compared to the verse. AKA the verse sounds louder and you dip in volume on the chorus. Could be the sub too. But something is hitting the limiter hard bringing down the sound.

Edit* I see you re-posted Seven Lions. Yeah, he's melodic dubstep. Essentially the genre is a mixture of trance/dubstep/pop edm.

Literally everything that people said here is correct.

Uh well..Can we hear it?
And what songs do you like? Maybe emulate a break from there?
i love tracks that bring back the lead chords, or do a simple drum solo. Just seriously struggling to come up with my own. the new UKF track is a great example.

Am I allowed to say: just do that then

I mean if that's what you want. I assume you have an intro written with some melody or lead. Take that and change it up a bit.

When I start a new project my master channel is at 0db. It never moves.
I start all my tracks or midi lines at -10db.

I use Voxengo Elephant to monitor my waveform. If it goes above -6db, I correct each track or the track that is making it go over the -6dbs.

I'm with this guy. I start at -10db.

Very cool.

I'd love to see the project file to break each part down. I do a lot of abrupt, syncopated cuts in my song. So I'd be interested in seeing yours.

Good track.

But with 4.3k followers, I'm sure you know this already.

Cool track, catchy.

Not too many bad mixing elements. Could be tighter, sure. But is it good? Yup.
