Finished Tracks / Re: ''Swagg'' Piano x Strings Beat
« on: June 28, 2017, 05:12:27 pm »
hey.

im feeling the drum programming! very punchy and crisp. there's a few mixing things i'd think about. the piano at 0:50 is too loud. also, if you're intending for this to be rapped over, you might try throwing an acapella of a similar song over it to see how a vocal will sit over it. i have a feeling you might want to bring the strings back a bit during the verses, and then let it shine in the hook more, but maybe im wrong.

also! i see youve posted your own stuff a lot, which is cool, but definitely make sure to take part in other discussions around here!

thanks.

hey! welcome to the forum. i hope you'll take part in some other discussions around here, that would be awesome - y'all seem to know a lot about sound design. i'm sure you'll have valuable insights.

this is sorta relevant, since it is about sound design, but going forward, keep the self promotion to a minimum, please!!

Sound Design / Re: The "How do I make this sound?" thread

hi oneyejoe, welcome to the forum.

the pluck in the beginning sounds like just a lowpassed plucky saw playing that one chord. i hear some automation on the cutoff and decay for sure, as well as the pitch for that detuning. there's some reverb coming in the last few bars, which is why it all kinda blurs together along with the opening envelope.

the main bass sounds like a sawwave bass. the squelchy hits are a resonant filter, probably a lowpass too, being activated. the base sound itself should be pretty simple, the key will be in how u process it. tasteful distortion/ compression. a lot of dark techno is simple sounds like that, processed in a lot of real subtle ways. looking up deadmau5's streams where he made 'imaginary friends' might help give you ideas!

that vocal hit sounds like a reallyyy short syllable from a pack like vengeance. it sounds like there's some kind of stereo delay going on that makes it wider to contrast that mono bass. to play up that sorta watery artificial sound, you might also mess with some of FL's sample time stretching algorithms (speeding up/ slowing down samples to fit that 16th note), vocoding, or pitcher. any of those can help introduce that.

WIPs / Re: Chillout work-in-progress.

there's a LOT of really good melodic stuff here. that section 0:20 to 1:01 is lovely!

my main issue with it is that there's a lot of complete silence. the silence at 1:01 is way too much, as is 2:02 to 2:20. i would definitely shorten those for sure. the soundscape at 2:22 is honestly gorgeous! but because of how long it takes to get between sections, it loses all sense of context. even in pure ambient stuff there's rarely NOTHING going on. even just some lowpassed pads or some foley. i feel the same way about the chords at 1:10. there's a lot silence, which is good and makes the chords more powerful, but it could use more dimension.

in general, i would try listening to some songs that you like the structure of. try to pull influence from there. how long are their breakdowns? when do the drums go away, when do they come back in? again, lots of great ideas, they just need to be fleshed out a bit and put together. keep at it!

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / question about recording guitars!
« on: June 19, 2017, 02:12:02 am »
hey y'all!

ive been picking up guitar the past few months, currently an acoustic and i want to get an electric soonish. at some point want to start trying to record stuff on it. from what i've read, electric guitars are easier to record with an audio interface, and acoustics with a microphone. is that correct?

and, do you have any advice for what interfaces / microphones are a good place to start? any advice about recording for guitar in general, quirks youve noticed, anything is welcome!! everything ive tried producing till now has been 100% electronic so i'm kinda in the dark ahah.

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Dimensional Mixing

ErikF your first point is really good! it took a long time to get out of that mode, but i definitely agree that approaching it as more of a journey helps. Shaw, even though that's not specific advice (like "oh well always cut out 400hz on kicks"), i think that the takeaway from that is that there isn't one specific tip or trick that will instantly give u conrol.

also erik, wanna clarify on your 3rd point?  that seems to sorta fly in the face of the learning and experimenting bit you mentioned. i think i more or less get what ur saying but i dont want to misinterpret it.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / favorite lyricists?
« on: April 09, 2017, 04:08:16 pm »
i don't listen as intently to lyrics as i'd like, and i want to change that. who are some lyricists you enjoy? what are some lines and songs that stand out, and why? i'm open to any genre.
