Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / The Artist's Way
« on: February 10, 2017, 02:47:51 pm »
For any serious producer I would highly recommend the lessons in Julia Cameron's book 'The Artist's Way'. IF any of you have any thoughts on the book I'd love to hear them below, personally I found it to be a life changing read and really enabled me to reshuffle my life around music production. If anyone has any other techniques or insights don't hesitate to share them!

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Sounds being drowned out, where does it end?
« on: April 12, 2016, 05:38:05 pm »
this sounds like more of an arrangement issue than a mix issue to me. at any single point in time, there should really only be one element that the lister's attention is drawn to, and every other element is just "felt" in a way that complements or contrasts that main sound.

typically in EDM, that "main" sound is a bass or a lead. after deciding your focus, don't worry about how full or detailed the surrounding sounds are (i.e. chords, pads, percs, arps) because they are not there to steal attention. they exist almost entirely to get "lost in the mix" as you put it. if everything is loud and full and competing for attention, then nothing gains the attention, and your track sounds like mush.

That's a good point! So if for one section I wanted the chords to be the main focus and then have a lead come over the top, do you have any advice on how to then mix those, it doesn't made sense to then quieten the chords to make room for lead particularly if it's at a dramatic point in the song. Likewise I wouldn't want to just continually have to amplify each layer as it becomes the focus?

Mixing/Mastering / Sounds being drowned out, where does it end?
« on: April 08, 2016, 12:55:56 am »
I find that with a lot of tracks, I find some elements getting lost amongst the mix so if I compress these sounds or use something to make them stand out then it work, but then I lost a different element of the track, how much is too much? Surely I don't have to compress every element of the mix or boost it's volume to get it heard?

As for EQing overlapping frequencies, I sometimes find that it's not accurate enough (at least not in the 'Fruity parametric EQ' I'm using) and can end up changing the sound more than I desired just for the sake of another one being heard...

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Re: No Music Background...Thoughts?
« on: January 25, 2016, 12:19:10 pm »
I had very little music background beyond a few lessons at school, but I found that electronic music got me more interested in classical and music theory so I started to learn those too. I guess it doesn't matter where you begin because it's all relevant

If you want to be really edgy you can name it after an obscure reference to a character/place/event in a book or film?

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Re: Speaker driver diameters

Not only necessarily volume but in most cases (with same speaker series for example) the bigger driver models mean a bigger frequency range (lower frequency playback). That said, bigger doesn't always mean better

Thanks! So would there be a noticeable difference between 5in and 6in for example? (considering most producers here will be working in bedrooms?)

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Audio Interface worth it?
« on: January 16, 2016, 10:02:23 pm »
I was just wondering what the advantages are of having an audio interface (eg Focusrite 2i2) and whether it is worth getting one/essential/meh...

So, what do you think?

R&A Graveyard / Re: Different sub forums for DAWs?
« on: January 15, 2016, 06:58:00 pm »
I think this forum is doing it right. It's always a bad idea to add sub-forums just because they sound like good ideas. The time to add a sub-forum is when the main forum is so full you need to split it up -- i.e. "There are tons of Ableton-specific posts in the production forum so we need a sub-forum for those."

I do agree, I just think some people might not be posting what they want because they're unsure where to post DAW specific questions

Always sensible to keep it in key, but as with most things if it sounds better to you somehow in a different key or you don't notice it then go with that!

There's always vocaloid software, which I think would suit your style of music quite well, worth experimenting with I'd say :)

I'd definitely appreciate this idea!

Reversed noises with reverb usually sound good to me personally, either in the foreground or background

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Speaker driver diameters
« on: January 11, 2016, 02:47:52 pm »
I'm looking at buying a new pair of speakers and wondered what effect the size of the cone/driver has on the sound? For example what would be the main difference between a 5 inch and 6 inch driver? Is it purely volume?
