Agreed with a lot that has already been said.

I've found that most of the barrier between making music and hitting a block is actually sitting down, opening the DAW, and just doing something, anything. If you don't focus too hard on progress and just do anything (someone recommended routine sound design or something, that's a good idea). However, it's important to do it each and every day, even if it is only for an hour.

That is, unless you're Eric Prydz. Then you can go ahead and work whenever you damn well please.

I find myself just turning on my DAW every day, but the length I work on a song can be anywhere from 1-8 hours. I usually just mess around with things for an hour, and then go do something else for there rest of the day.

I feel like you have to try and write something you love everyday. Sitting down and "waiting for inspiration" is usually a cop out unless you're someone on the level of Prydz, Flume, Porter etc etc. You can be great at everything technical, but if you've only attempted to write a few songs this past month (not saying you did, just an example) then I think that's really limiting to one's growth and progress. You have to do your half when it comes to inspiration by showing up amd being ready to be inspired, even (and often times) when it doesn't happen.
loud, lush, aggressive stuff usually. writing music for ~4 years.

For me at least, because I'm so inexperienced I view being in the DAW as studying. sometimes I open and nothing happens and that's okay but now with the forum here I can at least try new techniques and see what they sound like and how to do them. That's how I figured out parallel compression and stuff like that. So forcing yourself to dedicate time is more important I guess. if you don't make music you at least better be learning something new. So I try and work on music very often even if nothing fruitful happens in terms of an actual song as long as I learn something.

Is true, messing around and learning in your DAW of choice is great to improve your skills, but the feeling of inspiration every once in a while should motivate you enough to using those skills and applying them in the area of inspiration you're feeling at that time, through the music.

You know I've had results both ways... I've locked myself down and said "You have to make something even if it's crappy" and make good and bad music.

Similarly I've felt 'inspired' and come up with complete crap. In the end it's definitely subjective.

One very unconventional method is sleep deprivation. I've had some really good results producing/writing music late night into the morning. I feel a little delirious and get kind of creative. Reality shifts in my brain a bit haha O_o :)... not a permanent solution :P

Thats a great point. I've had results both ways as well. When I force myself & something comes out of it pretty quickly, I'll keep going until the creativity stops. But when I force myself and it just isn't working, I stop, because it just makes me feel crappy and like I don't know what the heck im doing with my life lol.

And I like the no-sleep method as well haha, when I'm inspired anyway. I've literally stayed up like 2 days working on music (with small breaks in between of course). Plus I know Madeon sometimes has 24-hour writing sessions.
~And so he took his pain & turned it into something beautiful. Something that people could connect to.
